The Night of Krishna's Birth
Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, born at midnight to Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison of the tyrant Kansa. The Bhagavata Purana paints the night: chains falling open, guards asleep, the Yamuna parting as Vasudeva carried the newborn through the storm to Gokul, Sheshnag spreading his hoods as an umbrella against the rain. Krishna is the divinity who chose to be approachable — cowherd, butter thief, friend, charioteer, teacher of the Bhagavad Gita — and Janmashtami's mood is correspondingly intimate: not awe at a distance, but welcoming a child home. The midnight hour matters because the tradition holds that the Lord arrives at the darkest turning of the night, exactly when he is needed most.
How Janmashtami Is Observed
Devotees keep a fast through the day — some nirjala (without water), most phalahar — broken only after the midnight puja. Homes and temples build jhanki: cradle scenes of infant Krishna (Laddu Gopal), decorated with flowers and tiny footprints walked in from the doorway. At the nishita hour the murti is bathed in panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar — dressed in new clothes, rocked in the cradle, and greeted with the midnight aarti as conches sound. The next day, Maharashtra's Dahi Handi teams build human pyramids to smash the hanging pot of curd, re-enacting the butter thief's finest work. The exact Ottawa date and the computed midnight (nishita) moment appear in the Festivals & Dates list on this page — note that ISKCON and some traditions may observe on a different day when the tithi spans two sunrises.
Janmashtami in Ottawa & Canada
Ashtami is fixed by the moon, and the midnight that matters is your local midnight — so Ottawa's Janmashtami can fall a day away from India's, and the nishita moment here is computed for Eastern time on this page. A home celebration is simple and complete: fast to your capacity, set up a small cradle jhanki with the children, sing bhajans through the evening — the Kunj Bihari aarti and Madhurashtakam from our library are the classics — and do the panchamrit abhisheka and aarti at the computed midnight. Ottawa's mandirs hold Janmashtami programmes that typically run late into the night with kirtan and the midnight darshan; see our Hindu temples in Ottawa guide and confirm each temple's schedule.

Questions
When is Janmashtami this year in Ottawa?
The exact Ottawa date — computed astronomically for the Canadian timezone, with the midnight puja moment — is shown in the Festivals & Dates list on this page. Because the tithi is timezone-dependent, it may differ from India's date.
Why is the puja at midnight?
Krishna was born at midnight in Kansa's prison. The nishita kala — the mid-portion of the night — is therefore the moment of the main abhisheka and aarti, and the fast is broken after it.
Why do some temples celebrate Janmashtami on a different day?
When the Ashtami tithi and Rohini nakshatra fall across two days, traditions differ on which combination takes precedence — smarta and vaishnava calendars can legitimately differ by a day. Both are correct within their own rules.
