Nag Panchami honours the naga — the serpent that Hindu tradition never cast as mere menace. Shesha, the thousand-headed, holds the worlds and makes Vishnu's bed on the cosmic ocean; Vasuki serves as the churning-rope of the amrita and rests around Shiva's throat; even Kaliya, the venomous king of the Yamuna whom young Krishna danced into submission, was not killed but sent home, his hoods bearing the Lord's footprints. The festival's charter story comes from the Mahabharata: King Janamejaya's great sarpa satra, the sacrifice meant to annihilate all serpents in vengeance for his father's death by snakebite, was stopped mid-mantra by the young sage Astika — and the day the destruction ceased became the day of reconciliation. Falling in monsoon-flooded Shravana, when real snakes leave the waterlogged earth for human paths, the festival turns an ancient fear into a settled peace.

Worship goes to images: nag idols of silver, stone or clay, pictures pasted by the doorway, or serpents drawn on the wall with turmeric and sandalwood — offered milk, akshata, flowers and kheer. Pouring milk on a nag image is the day's signature act (tradition itself notes that live snakes should never be fed milk — it sickens them; the offering belongs to the deity, not the reptile). Women pray for the family's protection from snakebite and for the wellbeing of brothers; farming households traditionally do not dig, plough or drive stakes into the earth, leaving the nagas' underground world undisturbed for a day. Falling within Sawan, Shiva's month, the day folds naturally into Shiva worship — Vasuki at his throat makes every Shiva puja a nag puja too. The Panchami tithi is computed astronomically, so Ottawa's date — calculated on this page for Eastern time — can differ from India's. The observance travels easily because it was always aniconic at heart: a printed or drawn nag image by the door, turmeric and kumkum, a small bowl of milk offered and then respectfully disposed of, and the Sawan Shiva connection kept with Om Namah Shivaya or the Shiv Chalisa from our library. Ottawa's garter snakes need no milk and pose no danger — but the day's underlying vow, peace with the wild things whose ground we share, reads rather well in a Canadian summer.
