The King Who Returns
Onam is Kerala's greatest festival, and its story is one of the tradition's most tender. Mahabali, the asura king, ruled a Kerala so just and prosperous that the devas grew uneasy; Vishnu came to him as Vamana, a dwarf brahmachari, asking only three paces of land. Mahabali granted it — against his guru's warning — and Vamana grew to cosmic size, covering earth and heavens in two strides. For the third, the king offered his own head, and was pressed down to the netherworld — but granted one boon for his unmatched generosity: to return once each year and see his people happy. Onam is that visit. Kerala cleans, decorates, feasts and celebrates so the returning king finds his land as golden as he left it — a festival where the honoured guest is a defeated king, and the moral belongs to his giving.
Ten Days to Thiruvonam
Onam unfolds over ten days, opening on Atham, when the first small pookkalam — the flower carpet — is laid at the threshold. Each morning it grows by a ring of fresh petals, reaching full glory on Thiruvonam, the main day, when Mahabali is welcomed home. Thiruvonam brings the Onam sadya: the grand vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf — rice, sambar, avial, thoran, olan, kalan, pachadi, banana chips, and payasam after payasam — by custom two dozen dishes or more, eaten sitting together regardless of rank, because in Mahabali's kingdom all were equal.
