The Vaishno Devi Yatra is the pilgrimage up the Trikuta hills from Katra in Jammu to the holy cave where the Mother Goddess is worshipped as three natural rock pindis. Pilgrims come year-round, but the two Navratras (March–April and September–October) are the shrine's high season, when the climb and the darbar take on festival splendour.

When: Year-round; peak during Chaitra Navratri (March–April) and Sharad Navratri (September–October)
Where: The holy cave (Bhawan) on the Trikuta hills above Katra, Jammu & Kashmir — about 13 km on foot from Katra
Deity: Mata Vaishno Devi, worshipped as three pindis — Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati in one
Observance: Registered trek or pony/palki/helicopter ascent, darshan of the pindis in the cave, and the closing visit to Bhairon Nath's temple
Regional name: Mata Vaishno Devi · Sherawali · Mata Rani · Trikuta Wali Mata

The story of Mata Vaishno Devi

Tradition holds that Vaishno Devi was born of the combined radiance of the great Goddess to uphold dharma, and lived in tapasya awaiting the age's fulfilment. The best-loved episode concerns Bhairon Nath, a tantric who pursued the young Devi from the bhandara of her devotee Shridhar. She withdrew up the Trikuta hills — pausing at spots the yatra still marks, Banganga where she drew water with an arrow, Charan Paduka where her footprints remain, Adhkuwari where she hid nine months in a womb-like cave — before taking her Mahakali form at the cave now called the Bhawan and severing Bhairon's head. Repentant at death, he was granted the boon that pilgrims complete their yatra only after visiting his shrine above the cave. Within the Bhawan the Mother is worshipped not as an image but as three natural rock pindis, revered as Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati — three shaktis in one Devi.

How the yatra is made, and why Navratri is its season

The pilgrimage begins at Katra, where every yatri obtains a registration slip from the shrine board before starting the roughly thirteen-kilometre climb to the Bhawan. Most walk, day and night, to cries of "Jai Mata Di" along the paved, lit path; ponies, palanquins, battery cars and a helicopter service serve those who need them, and bathing, cloakroom and langar facilities line the route. At the Bhawan, pilgrims bathe, then file through the cave for darshan of the three pindis — there is no idol — and afterwards climb to Bhairon Nath's temple, now also linked by ropeway, to complete the yatra. During the two Navratras the shrine keeps its grandest form: special shringar of the pindis, extended aartis, the darbar decked in flowers, and the largest crowds of the year, for the nine nights of the Goddess are naturally the nine nights of her most famous northern abode.

The yatra and Navratri from Ottawa & Canada

For many Hindu families in Canada, Vaishno Devi is the pilgrimage they promise themselves; from Ottawa the practical route is a flight to Delhi, onward to Jammu, then taxi or train to Katra. Booking through the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board — for registration, accommodation and helicopter slots — is strongly advised, and the milder months on either side of the Navratra rushes make the climb gentler for elders and children. Those not travelling can keep the connection at home: the shrine's aarti is telecast and streamed daily, and during Navratri an Ottawa household can light an akhand jyoti, recite the Durga Saptashati or Mata ki bhentein, and keep the nine nights just as jagran-and-chowki families across the diaspora do. The site's calendar gives each year's Navratri dates for Ottawa.

Questions
What is worshipped inside the Vaishno Devi cave?

Three natural rock formations called pindis, revered as Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati — the three shaktis united in Mata Vaishno Devi. There is no sculpted idol in the sanctum.

Why do pilgrims visit Bhairon Nath's temple after darshan?

Tradition holds that the dying Bhairon Nath repented and the Devi granted him the boon that her yatra would be complete only when pilgrims also visited his shrine. His temple stands above the Bhawan and is the customary closing of the pilgrimage.

How long is the climb and is registration required?

The walk from Katra to the Bhawan is about thirteen kilometres on a paved, lit path, taking most pilgrims five to eight hours. Yes — every yatri needs a registration slip (yatra parchi) from the Shrine Board, obtainable at Katra or online, and it is checked at Banganga.

Is Navratri the best time to go?

It is the most festive and the most crowded — special shringar, extended aartis and the year's largest gatherings. Families seeking a quieter darshan often choose the weeks just before or after the Navratras, or the winter months.
