Pradosham Vratam

South IndiaVrataShivaMalayalam · Tamil · Kerala · Tamil Nadu

Pradosham is the twilight worship of Lord Shiva kept on the trayodashi (thirteenth tithi) of each lunar fortnight, observed with special devotion in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Devotees fast through the day and worship Shiva and Nandi in the pradosha kala — the hours around sunset — twice every lunar month.

When: Trayodashi (13th tithi) of both fortnights, in the evening — twice every lunar month, year-round
Where: Shiva temples and homes across Tamil Nadu and Kerala; observed by Shaivas everywhere
Deity: Lord Shiva with Parvati; Nandi receives special honour
Observance: Daytime fast, abhishekam and worship of Shiva during the twilight pradosha hours, darshan between the horns of Nandi
Regional name: Pradosham (Tamil) · Pradosha vratam (Malayalam) · Pradosh vrat (North India)

The twilight when Shiva danced

Pradosha means the juncture of day and night — roughly the ninety minutes bracketing sunset — and tradition holds that on the trayodashi tithi this twilight becomes uniquely charged with Shiva's grace. The legend most often told links the vrata to the churning of the ocean of milk: when the terrible halahala poison rose and threatened all creation, the devas ran to Shiva, who drank the poison and held it in his throat, becoming Neelakantha, the blue-throated. Tradition holds that on the following trayodashi evening the grateful devas worshipped him, and Shiva, well pleased, danced between the horns of Nandi in the twilight. Hence the belief that during pradosha kala all the gods gather invisibly in every Shiva temple, and that worship in that window — however brief — carries the fruit of much longer devotion. In Tamil Shaiva practice, Pradosham is among the most faithfully kept of all recurring observances.

How the vratam is kept

The observant devotee fasts from morning on trayodashi, taking at most fruit or a light sattvik meal, and reserves the evening for worship. In temples across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the pradosha abhishekam is performed as sunset approaches: the linga — and in Tamil temples very often Nandi first — is bathed with milk, curd, honey, tender coconut water, sacred ash and sandal, to the chanting of Sri Rudram and the ringing of bells. A distinctive custom is to take darshan of Shiva through the space between Nandi's horns, and to whisper one's prayer into Nandi's ear so the bull may carry it to his Lord. Certain Pradoshams are held especially potent: Soma Pradosham falling on a Monday, Shani Pradosham on a Saturday, and the Maha Pradosham that precedes Maha Shivaratri. At home, an oil lamp, bilva leaves, and recitation of Om Namah Shivaya or the Lingashtakam in the twilight hour fulfil the vrata simply and completely.

Keeping Pradosham in Ottawa & Canada

Pradosham is a household-friendly vrata that needs no temple to be valid, which makes it easy to keep in Canada. The key is timing: pradosha kala follows local sunset, so in Ottawa the worship hour swings from around 4:30 pm in December to nearly 9 pm in June — check the site's calendar for each Pradosham date and use local sunset as your anchor. A simple observance is a light fast through the day, then a lamp, water or milk offered to a Shiva linga or image, bilva leaves if available, and Om Namah Shivaya or Sri Rudram chanted through the twilight. Families often keep at least the Soma and Shani Pradoshams if twice-monthly observance is difficult. Ottawa's Hindu temples generally perform Shiva abhishekam on Pradosham evenings — check your local temple's calendar.

Questions
How often does Pradosham come, and are all Pradoshams equal?

Pradosham falls on the trayodashi of both the waxing and waning fortnights, so twice every lunar month. All are considered fruitful, but Soma Pradosham (Monday), Shani Pradosham (Saturday) and the Maha Pradosham before Maha Shivaratri are held especially powerful.

Why is Nandi so important in Pradosham worship?

Tradition holds that Shiva danced between the horns of Nandi at the first Pradosham, so devotees take darshan of the Lord framed by Nandi's horns and whisper their prayers into the bull's ear, trusting him to convey them to Shiva.
