Somavara is the day of Soma — the moon — and the moon belongs to Shiva, who wears the crescent on his matted hair. Tradition tells that Chandra, the moon god, wasting away under Daksha's curse, worshipped Shiva and was granted the crescent's endless renewal: his light wanes but is never destroyed. Monday thus became the natural day to seek Shiva's grace, and the Somavara vrata is among the most widely kept weekly observances in the Hindu world. In the south it gathers special force twice a year: the Mondays of Shravana masam (July–August in the Telugu and Kannada amanta calendar), when the whole month is sacred to devotion, and the Mondays of Karthika masam — Karthigai in Tamil Nadu — when lamps and Shiva worship fill the season. Unmarried women traditionally keep it praying for a good husband, invoking Parvati's own tapas for Shiva; married couples keep it for family wellbeing and health.

The devotee rises early, bathes, and takes the sankalpa for the day's fast — some fast completely until moonrise or evening worship, while most take a single meal after sunset, avoiding rice in stricter customs and salt in others; family tradition governs the details. The heart of the day is abhishekam: at the temple, Rudrabhishekam with the chanting of Sri Rudram; at home, pouring water, milk, curd, honey and finally pure water over a small lingam, then offering bilva (vilvam/bilvapatra) leaves, vibhuti and unbroken white flowers. Om Namah Shivaya japa runs through the day. In the evening the family lights the lamp, and the Somavara vrata katha or a Shiva stotra — Lingashtakam, Bilvashtakam, Shiva Panchakshari — is recited before the fast is broken. During Karthika Somavarams, Telugu and Kannada households add deepa aradhana with rows of lamps, and many undertake all the Mondays of the month as a set.

A weekly household vrata is among the easiest observances to carry abroad, and Monday is Monday in every timezone — no tithi calculation is needed for the ordinary vrata. For the special months, check a locally computed panchang: the span of Shravana and Karthika masam for Ottawa can differ by a day from Indian listings, which changes which Mondays fall inside the month. Bilva leaves are the one scarce item; Indian groceries sometimes stock dried bilva, and tradition accepts vibhuti and white flowers with the sankalpa of bilva when leaves cannot be had. Ottawa's early winter sunsets make the evening worship and fast-breaking comfortably timed in Karthika season. Those who work Mondays can keep the japa through the day and perform the abhishekam after returning home — sincerity of the sankalpa, not the clock, is what the vrata asks.
