How this is worked out
Your janma rashi is the sidereal sign the Moon occupied at your birth — not the sun sign used in newspaper horoscopes. Your nakshatra is which of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon stood in, and the pada is which quarter of it. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon, which is why it needs your birth time and place, not just the date.
Positions use VSOP87 and ELP theory with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the same engine as this site's Panchang, agreeing with published references to within an arcminute.
The offset from UTC is taken from the timezone rules actually in force at your birth place on your birth date — not today's rules. That matters more than it sounds: India kept +6:30 during 1942–45, and Canada's daylight-saving dates changed in 2007.
