Refrain
om jai shiva onkara, svami jai shiva onkara
brahma vishnu sadashiva, arddhangi dhara
oṃ jai śiva oṅkārā, svāmī jai śiva oṅkārā
brahmā viṣṇu sadāśiva, arddhāṅgī dhārā
Om, victory to Shiva, the Omkara — who is Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva, bearing the Goddess as half his own body.
Verse 1
ekanana caturanana pancanana raje
hamsasana garudasana vrishavahana saje
ekānana caturānana pañcānana rāje
haṃsāsana garuḍāsana vṛṣavāhana sāje
He shines with one face, four faces, five faces; mounted on the swan, on Garuda, on the bull.
Verse 2
do bhuja cara caturbhuja dashabhuja ati sohe
triguna rupa nirakhate tribhuvana jana mohe
do bhuja cāra caturbhuja daśabhuja ati sohe
triguṇa rūpa nirakhate tribhuvana jana mohe
With two arms, four arms, ten arms he is resplendent; beholding his threefold form, the beings of the three worlds are enchanted.
Verse 3
akshamala vanamala mundamala dhari
candana mrigamada sohe bhale shashidhari
akṣamālā vanamālā muṇḍamālā dhārī
candana mṛgamada sohe bhāle śaśidhārī
He wears the rudraksha mala, the forest garland, the garland of skulls; sandal and musk adorn him, the moon upon his brow.
Verse 4
shvetambara pitambara baghambara ange
sanakadika garudadika bhutadika sange
śvetāmbara pītāmbara bāghambara aṅge
sanakādika garuḍādika bhūtādika saṅge
Clad in white robes, in yellow robes, in tiger skin; accompanied by the sages Sanaka, by Garuda, and by the hosts of spirits.
Verse 5
kara ke madhya kamandalu cakra trishuladhari
sukhakari dukhahari jagapalanakari
kara ke madhya kamaṇḍalu cakra triśūladhārī
sukhakārī dukhahārī jagapālanakārī
In their hands the water-pot, the discus, the trident — giver of joy, remover of sorrow, sustainer of the world.
Verse 6
brahma vishnu sadashiva janata aviveka
pranavakshara mem shobhita ye tinom eka
brahmā viṣṇu sadāśiva jānata avivekā
praṇavākṣara meṃ śobhita ye tīnoṃ ekā
Only the undiscerning see Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva as separate; within the sacred syllable Om, these three shine as one.
Verse 7
kashi mem vishvanatha virajata nandi brahmacari
nita uthi bhoga lagavata mahima ati bhari
kāśī meṃ viśvanātha virājata nandī brahmacārī
nita uṭhi bhoga lagāvata mahimā ati bhārī
In Kashi dwells Vishwanath with Nandi the celibate; daily offerings are made — his glory is immense.
Verse 8
trigunasvami ji ki arati jo koi nara gave
kahata shivananda svami manavanchita phala pave
triguṇasvāmī jī kī āratī jo koī nara gāve
kahata śivānanda svāmī manavāñchita phala pāve
Whoever sings this aarti of the Lord of the three gunas, says Swami Shivananda, receives the fruit their heart desires.
When it is recited: Sung on Mondays, Pradosh, Masik and Maha Shivaratri, in the month of Shravan, and at the close of any Shiva puja or abhishek.
Traditional significance: Verse by verse it holds the one-in-three vision: single, four and five faces; one mala of three kinds; the Lord seen as creator, sustainer and dissolver — ending in the prayer that seeing him, sorrow is removed.
When is the Shiv aarti sung? After Shiva puja or abhishek — especially on Mondays, Pradosh evenings, Shivaratri and through the month of Shravan.
Source: Traditional — the standard North Indian Shiva aarti. Regional versions may vary — this text follows the version most widely used in community worship.
