Who is Saraswati?

Saraswati is the Devi as knowledge itself — vak, the sacred word; vidya, learning; and kala, the arts. In the Rig Veda she is first a mighty river and its inspiring flow (“best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses”); by Puranic times the flowing one is the stream of consciousness and eloquence. Everything about her form teaches: white robes and white lotus for stainless sattva; the veena because knowledge must be tuned and played, not merely stored; the book and mala balancing scholarship with contemplation; the swan, which can drink the milk and leave the water, for viveka — discrimination between the true and the false. She wears little gold: knowledge needs no ornament, and keeps its distance from mere wealth.

Stories and Legends

Born, by the Matsya and other Puranas, from the mouth or mind of Brahma, she gave the creator the power of ordered speech — without her his creation would have remained noise without meaning. It is Saraswati who grants the rishis their mantras and the poets their metres: Valmiki's first shloka, born of grief at a hunter's arrow, is her descent into human speech. The invisible Saraswati river, joining Ganga and Yamuna at the Triveni Sangam of Prayag, is her enduring geographic sign — the hidden stream of wisdom beneath the visible currents of life. In Kashmir she is Sharda, whose ancient shrine gave the Sharada script its name; in the South she is honoured with the Navratri ayudha puja, when even tools and instruments rest upon her altar.

Worship in Practice

Vasant Panchami, the fifth of Magha's bright fortnight when spring first stirs, is her great day: dressed in yellow, students place their books and musicians their instruments at her feet, and children are initiated into their first letters (Vidyarambha, aksharabhyasa) writing on rice or slate. During Sharad Navratri her puja spans the Saraswati avahan to visarjan days, and in Kerala Vidyarambha on Vijayadashami begins thousands of first lessons. Before every exam, recital and study session her vandana is recited — “yā kundendu...” — and her offerings are white and yellow: white flowers and sandal, yellow sweets like kesar halwa and boondi, honey for sweet speech.

Questions
Why do students avoid touching books with their feet?

Books, instruments and tools are Saraswati's living presence. Touching them with the feet is treated as disrespect to the goddess herself; if it happens, the traditional gesture of apology is to touch the object and then one's eyes or forehead.
