The Lord Who Comes Out to Meet Everyone
Once a year at Puri, the temple turns itself inside out. Jagannath — the Lord of the Universe, Krishna in his most beloved Odia form — leaves the sanctum with Balabhadra and Subhadra and rides three towering wooden chariots down the Grand Road, the Bada Danda, to the Gundicha temple. The point of the journey is radical and tender at once: inside the temple only some may enter, but on the road the Lord belongs to absolutely everyone — every caste, every faith, every passer-by who grabs the rope. Pulling the chariot is itself the worship; the scriptures promise that one who so much as touches the rope of Nandighosha is drawn toward liberation the way the rath is drawn down the road.
Nine Days at the Aunt's House
The chariots are built new every single year — same design, same names, new neem wood: Nandighosha with sixteen wheels for Jagannath, Taladhwaja for Balabhadra, Darpadalana for Subhadra. Before a single rope is pulled, the Gajapati king of Puri performs Chhera Pahanra, sweeping the chariot floors with a gold-handled broom — the region's sovereign serving as the Lord's humblest sweeper. The deities then spend nine days at Gundicha, remembered as their aunt's house and as the garden of their original carving, feasting on poda pitha before the Bahuda Yatra carries them home. On the way back comes Suna Besha, when the three siblings appear on their chariots dressed in gold.
