Bhima's Dilemma
Among the Pandavas, Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, mother Kunti and Draupadi all faithfully kept every Ekadashi fast. But for Bhimasena it was impossible: in his belly burned the fire called Vrika, and hunger was beyond his endurance. Unable to fast, Bhima was troubled — was he dishonouring the Lord?
Carrying this anguish, he went to the sage Vedavyasa and asked with folded hands: "Grandsire, my brothers and mother all keep the Ekadashi vrat and urge me to do the same, but I cannot stay hungry. Can I not attain the good end by charity and merit alone, without the Ekadashi fast?"
One Fast Equal to Twenty-Four
The sage Vyasa replied: "Bhima, if you desire heaven and the good end, do not abandon Ekadashi." Bhima said: "Twenty-four Ekadashis in a year I cannot manage — tell me one vrat whose keeping grants the fruit of them all." Then Vyasa, in his grace, taught him: "Keep the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha — and keep it nirjala, without water. From sunrise until the parana at the next sunrise, take not even a drop. Whoever keeps this one waterless Ekadashi with faith receives the fruit of all the Ekadashis of the year."
Bhimasena summoned his strength and kept the severe fast — which is why it is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi. It is said that even the mighty Bhima found the day hard beyond telling, but on completing it he gained boundless peace and merit.
On this day the gift of water holds special glory: setting up water stalls, donating pitchers, fans, sherbet and seasonal fruit. Whoever keeps Nirjala Ekadashi and hears this katha is freed from sins and becomes a sharer in Lord Vishnu's grace. — Jai Shri Hari!

When it is recited: Read on Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi), the strictest of all Ekadashis, kept without even water from sunrise until the next day's parana.
Traditional significance: Nirjala Ekadashi is the great equaliser of the vrat calendar: whoever cannot keep the year's twenty-four Ekadashis may keep this single waterless fast and receive their combined fruit. Falling in the heat of Jyeshtha, it is also the day of sharing water — donating pitchers, sherbet and fans is central to its observance.
Questions
Is Nirjala Ekadashi really kept without any water?
Yes — that is its defining austerity, from sunrise on Ekadashi to the parana next morning. Those who are ill, elderly, pregnant or otherwise unable should keep a gentler form (fruit or water permitted) with the same devotion; tradition values capacity honestly measured.
When is the parana (breaking of the fast)?
On Dwadashi morning, within the prescribed window after sunrise — check the parana time for your city on our Ekadashi calendar.
