Chapter 1 — Narada's Question
Once, in the sacred forest of Naimisharanya, Shaunaka and the assembled sages asked Shri Suta — "O best of sages, by what vrat or austerity may a person in this age of Kali attain the desires of the heart?" Suta replied that the divine sage Narada had once asked Lord Vishnu the very same question. Wandering the worlds, Narada had come to the mortal realm and seen human beings suffering many sorrows according to their deeds; seeking a remedy, he approached Lord Narayana. The Lord said: "O Narada, whoever performs the vrat of Shri Satyanarayan with faith and devotion will enjoy happiness in this world and liberation at the end. The vrat may be done on any auspicious day — especially Purnima or Sankranti — in the evening. Let the devotee prepare the sava (one-and-a-quarter) measure of prasad with bananas, ghee, milk, wheat flour and sugar or jaggery, worship the Lord together with family and Brahmins, hear the katha, and share the prasad. All right wishes are fulfilled by this."
Chapter 2 — The Poor Brahmin and the Woodcutter
In the city of Kashi there lived a very poor Brahmin who survived by begging. Lord Satyanarayan, taking the form of an aged Brahmin, asked him the cause of his sorrow and told him: "Perform the vrat of Shri Satyanarayan — it destroys all suffering." The Brahmin performed the vrat with due rites, gradually prospered, and, keeping the vrat throughout his life, attained liberation at the end.
One day a woodcutter came to that Brahmin's house to sell wood. Stopping for water, he saw the worship being performed and asked what it was and what fruit it gave. Hearing its greatness, he took the prasad and vowed: "Whatever I earn today from selling wood, I will spend on the vrat of Satyanarayan." That day he received double the usual price. With bananas, milk, ghee, flour and sugar he performed the vrat together with his kin — and by its power he gained wealth and children, enjoyed happiness in this world, and attained the highest state thereafter.
Chapter 3 — The Merchant's Vow
A righteous king named Ulkamukha was performing the Satyanarayan vrat on the bank of the river Bhadrashila when a merchant named Sadhu arrived on his trading rounds. Seeing the worship he asked respectfully what the king was doing, and the king explained he was performing the vrat of Satyanarayan for the blessing of progeny. The merchant said: "I too am childless. If a child is born to me, I will also perform this vrat."
In time his wife Lilavati gave birth to a daughter, Kalavati. Lilavati reminded her husband of his vow, but he put it off, saying he would perform the vrat at their daughter's wedding. When the time came he married Kalavati to a worthy merchant's son — yet still did not perform the vrat. Displeased, the Lord set his lila in motion: when Sadhu and his son-in-law went to trade in the city of Ratnasarpur, a false charge of theft fell upon them, and King Chandraketu imprisoned them both and seized their wealth. At home, Lilavati and Kalavati fell into such hardship that they were forced to beg.
Chapter 4 — Remembrance and Release
One day, faint with hunger, Kalavati saw the Satyanarayan puja being performed at a Brahmin's house; she heard the katha, received prasad and returned home. When she told her mother everything, Lilavati remembered her husband's forgotten vow. With her kin she performed the vrat with full faith and prayed: "Lord, forgive the fault of my husband and son-in-law." The Lord was pleased. Appearing to King Chandraketu in a dream, he commanded: "The two merchants are innocent — release them, or your kingdom will perish." The king freed them with honour and returned their wealth twofold.
On the voyage home the Lord tested the merchant. In the form of a wandering sannyasi he asked, "What does your boat carry?" Drunk with wealth, Sadhu mocked him: "Why, do you mean to take some? It carries only leaves and vines." "So be it," said the sannyasi — and the cargo turned to leaves and vines. When the distraught merchant understood whom he had insulted, he fell at the sannyasi's feet and begged forgiveness. The Lord said: "You vowed my vrat and forgot it, again and again. Perform it now with faith." Upon his sincere repentance the boat filled with treasure once more, and Sadhu sailed homeward with his son-in-law.
Chapter 5 — The Prasad Must Never Be Slighted
Nearing the city, Sadhu sent word home. Lilavati and Kalavati were just then performing the vrat. Lilavati completed the katha and took the prasad, but Kalavati, overjoyed at her husband's return, ran to meet him leaving her prasad untouched. Displeased at the slight to the prasad, the Lord caused the boat to sink with her husband aboard. As Kalavati wept, a voice from the sky declared: "She has abandoned the prasad. Let her return and receive it, and she will find her husband again." Kalavati went home and took the prasad with reverence — and her husband reappeared, boat and all. Thereafter Sadhu performed the vrat with all his kin, and continued it every Purnima for the rest of his days.
Likewise a king named Tungadhwaj, returning from the hunt, saw cowherds worshipping Lord Satyanarayan beneath a banyan tree — but out of pride neither joined them nor accepted the prasad. His hundred sons and all his wealth were lost. When understanding dawned, the king went back to the cowherds, worshipped with faith and took the prasad — and all was restored.
Suta concluded: "Whoever performs the vrat of Shri Satyanarayan and hears this katha with faith and devotion gains prosperity, progeny and good fortune, and the highest state at the end. In the age of Kali, this worship of Satyanarayan bears visible fruit." — Jai Shri Satyanarayan Bhagavan!

When it is recited: Read during Satyanarayan puja, traditionally on Purnima (full moon), Sankranti days, or any auspicious occasion — housewarming, marriage, new venture or in fulfilment of a vow.
Traditional significance: Satyanarayan is Narayana worshipped as Satya — Truth. The katha teaches that the vrat is open to everyone regardless of wealth or station, that promises made to the Lord must be kept, and that prasad must never be disregarded. Hearing the katha with faith is itself the heart of the puja.
Questions
On which day should the Satyanarayan vrat be done?
Purnima (full moon) and Sankranti are the classic days, traditionally in the evening; the katha itself says any auspicious day is acceptable. Many families also hold it at housewarmings, weddings and new beginnings.
What is the traditional prasad?
Sava (1¼) measure of panchamrit and churma-style prasad: wheat flour (or rice flour) roasted in ghee with sugar or jaggery, offered with bananas, milk and tulsi leaves — shared by all present, and never to be declined or left aside.
