tvam eva mata ca pita tvam eva tvam eva bandhush ca sakha tvam eva tvam eva vidya dravinam tvam eva tvam eva sarvam mama deva-deva

tvam eva mātā ca pitā tvam eva tvam eva bandhuś ca sakhā tvam eva tvam eva vidyā draviṇaṃ tvam eva tvam eva sarvaṃ mama deva-deva

You alone are my mother, you alone my father; you alone my kinsman, you alone my friend; you alone are knowledge, you alone wealth; you are my everything, O God of gods.

When it is recited: Recited at the close of prayers and aarti in homes, temples and schools across all traditions. Often the final verse a family sings together.

Traditional significance: Every human support — parents, friends, learning, wealth — is seen here as a face of the one Divine. Reciting it turns dependence on the world into trust in God, which is why it closes so many prayer gatherings.

Which deity is this verse addressed to?

It is addressed simply to “deva-deva” — the God of gods — so every tradition uses it for its own ishta devata: Krishna, Rama, Shiva, Devi or the formless Divine.
