In the ritual calendar of Braj, the weeks from Vasant Panchami to Holi are one long crescendo of spring, and Phulera Dooj is the day the play properly begins. The name comes from phool, flower: tradition in Braj holds that on this day Krishna sets aside all other engagements and joins Radha and the gopis in a Holi of blossoms, and the temples enact exactly that. Deities are dressed in garments trimmed with flowers, a small coloured cloth is tied at the waist of Krishna's murti as a sign that he is now ready for the games of Holi, and priests shower petals and the first pinches of gulal over the assembled devotees. From this day the singing of Holi's dhamar and rasiya songs begins in earnest in Mathura and Vrindavan, continuing daily until the festival itself. Phulera Dooj is thus less a separate feast than a threshold — the moment spring's devotion turns playful.

In the great Braj temples the day brings phoolon ki holi — Holi played with flowers. Baskets of rose, marigold and champa petals are rained over devotees during darshan, and the sanctum floors turn into carpets of colour; a light dusting of gulal often follows, though the boisterous wet Holi waits for Phalguna's end. Special bhog is offered, with festive dishes and sweets, and the deities' shringar is at its most ornate. In homes, devotees offer flowers and a touch of gulal at the feet of Krishna's image, cook something sweet for bhog, and begin singing Holi songs. The day carries one further distinction: almanac tradition counts Phulera Dooj an abujha muhurat — a date so inherently auspicious that no further muhurat calculation is needed — so it is one of the busiest wedding days of the season across Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, along with engagements, griha pravesh and new ventures.

The flower-Holi of Vrindavan happens in Braj, and it is well worth watching: the Banke Bihari and other temple celebrations are live-streamed, and with the Indian evening falling in the Ottawa morning, families can comfortably join darshan over breakfast.
