Annavaram, on the Ratnagiri hill above the Pampa river in coastal Andhra Pradesh, is the most famous seat of Satyanarayana Swamy — the form of Vishnu worshipped as the Lord of truth. The sthala tradition holds that the deity expressed his wish to dwell on the hill, and the name Annavaram is popularly read as 'anina varam' — the boon that was promised. The temple's sanctum is distinctive: it is built to suggest a chariot, and the tall composite image is revered as embodying the trimurti, with Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma understood within one worship. Devotees across the Telugu lands treat Annavaram as the natural home of the Satyanarayana Vratam, the household rite of truth-keeping and gratitude. Performing that vratam, or witnessing the Lord's kalyanam here, is widely held to bring the blessings of a stable, truthful and prosperous family life — which is why newly married couples in particular make the pilgrimage.

The Kalyanotsavam is the ritual wedding of Satyanarayana Swamy with his consort, performed by temple priests on behalf of sponsoring devotees — most often couples, who sit as participants while the divine marriage is conducted with vedic mantras, the tying of the mangalasutra to the utsava images, talambralu (the shower of turmeric-tinted rice) and mangala vaidyam music. Unlike a festival that comes once a year, the kalyanam at Annavaram is offered daily in batches, so pilgrims can book it much as they would at Tirumala. Most families pair it with the Satyanarayana Vratam, performed in the spacious vratam halls the temple maintains, followed by the hill temple's celebrated prasadam. The temple also keeps a grand annual Kalyana Mahotsavam in the month of Vaisakha (April–May), when the utsava deities are taken in procession and the wedding is celebrated on a festival scale with days of cultural and ritual programmes.

The Kalyanotsavam itself belongs to Ratnagiri hill, and many Telugu families in Canada plan it into an India visit — often soon after a wedding in the family, booking the kalyanam and vratam together at Annavaram. From Ottawa, the most natural way to keep the tradition alive is the Satyanarayana Vratam itself: it is a household rite, performed at home on a Purnima (full-moon) evening or any auspicious day, with the katha read aloud and simple prasadam of wheat rava, banana and sugar. The Andhra Pradesh temple endowments system also allows devotees abroad to sponsor sevas remotely, and the temple's festivals are increasingly streamed. Ottawa is nine and a half to ten and a half hours behind India depending on daylight saving, so a morning kalyanam at Annavaram falls in the late evening of the previous day here — convenient for watching together as a family.
