Narasimha Jayanti celebrates the appearance of Lord Narasimha, Vishnu's man-lion avatara who emerged at dusk to protect the child-devotee Prahlada. It falls on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi (April–May) and is kept with fasting and evening pooja across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with Ahobilam as its great pilgrimage centre.

The Lord who came at twilight

The Bhagavata Purana tells how the asura king Hiranyakashipu, armoured by a boon — death neither by man nor beast, neither by day nor night, neither indoors nor outdoors, by no weapon, on neither earth nor sky — persecuted his own son Prahlada for his unshakeable devotion to Vishnu. When the king struck a pillar demanding to know whether Vishnu was in it, the Lord burst forth as Narasimha, man-lion — neither man nor beast — at twilight, on the threshold, and destroyed the tyrant on his own lap with his nails, honouring every clause of the boon. Narasimha Jayanti, on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi, marks this appearance. In South India the avatara's homeland is Ahobilam in Andhra's Nallamala hills, where the sthala purana holds that the manifestation itself took place; its nine shrines — the Nava Narasimha — spread across the forested gorge, and the Ahobila Matha has carried the worship for centuries.

How the jayanti is observed

Because the Lord appeared at dusk, the day's worship culminates at sandhya kala. Devotees keep a fast through the day — many take only phalahara — and in the evening perform abhishekam and pooja to Lakshmi-Narasimha, offering panakam (jaggery water), kosambari and fruits, the cooling naivedyam of the Vaishakha heat. The Narasimha mantra, Runa Vimochana Narasimha Stotram, and the Kavacha and Ashtakam are recited; reading the Prahlada charitra from the Bhagavata is a cherished custom. Temples across the three states hold special utsavams: at Ahobilam the jayanti draws pilgrims trekking to the hill shrines; Karnataka's Narasimha kshetras such as Melukote's Yoga Narasimha hill and the Devarayanadurga shrines, and Tamil Nadu temples such as Sholingur and Namakkal's rock-cut Narasimha, all observe the day with abhishekams and processions. The fast is traditionally broken the next morning.

Keeping Narasimha Jayanti in Ottawa & Canada

The observance transfers naturally to a Canadian home because its core is a household evening pooja. In Ottawa the jayanti falls in late April or May, when sunset comes around 8 pm — keep the fast to your capacity through the day and perform the pooja at local dusk, the very hour of the Lord's appearance. Panakam needs only jaggery, water, cardamom and dry ginger; kosambari only soaked moong dal, cucumber and coconut — all easily found here. Recite whichever Narasimha stotra the family knows, and tell children the Prahlada story, one of the most loved in all Hindu tradition: the tale of a child whose faith outlasted a tyrant. Families with ties to Ahobilam or other Narasimha temples often watch live-streamed jayanti utsavams. Check the site's calendar for the exact Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi date each year.

Questions
Why is the Narasimha Jayanti pooja performed in the evening?

Tradition holds that Narasimha emerged from the pillar at twilight — neither day nor night — to honour the terms of Hiranyakashipu's boon. The pooja is therefore timed to sandhya kala, around local sunset, rather than morning.

What is special about Ahobilam?

Ahobilam, in the Nallamala hills of Andhra Pradesh, is revered as the very place of Narasimha's manifestation. Nine forms of the Lord — the Nava Narasimha — are enshrined across its upper and lower hills, and the Ahobila Matha, a historic Sri Vaishnava institution, is rooted there. The jayanti is its greatest day.

What is offered as naivedyam on Narasimha Jayanti?

The classic offerings are cooling ones suited to the Vaishakha heat: panakam (spiced jaggery water), kosambari (soaked moong dal salad), buttermilk and fruits. Any pure home-cooked offering made with devotion is acceptable.
