Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, seventh avatar of Vishnu, born at noon on Chaitra Shukla Navami to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya of Ayodhya. Where Krishna's festival belongs to midnight and mischief, Rama's belongs to midday and clarity: he is maryada purushottama, the man who never stepped outside dharma — the son who honoured an unjust exile, the king who put his people before his own happiness. The Ramayana and Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas are recited through the day because Rama's story is itself considered his worship. Devotees keep a fast — full or phalahar — and gather for the madhyahna puja, since the birth is placed at the midday hour: the cradle is rocked, Ram Lalla (infant Rama) is bathed and adorned, and the Ram janam portions of the Ramcharitmanas are sung. Continuous recitation of the Ramayana, akhand Ram-nam kirtan, and the Shri Ram Stuti — "Shri Ramachandra kripalu bhajman" — fill the day; panakam and neer mor (jaggery water and spiced buttermilk) are the traditional South Indian offerings, where the day is also kept as Sita–Rama kalyanam, their wedding.
