The six days of war and victory

Kanda Sashti commemorates the purpose for which Murugan was born. The Skanda Purana and the Tamil Kanda Puranam tell that the demon Surapadman, swollen with boons, oppressed the devas until Shiva brought forth the six-sparked child who became Skanda, the divine commander. Armed with the Vel — the lance of shakti given by his mother Parvati — Murugan led the deva armies against Surapadman for six days. On the sixth day, tradition holds, he split the demon's final form, a great mango tree rising from the sea; from the two halves came the peacock that became his mount and the rooster that adorns his banner — defeat transformed into service. The battle is placed at Tiruchendur on the Bay of Bengal shore, which is why the Sashti of Aippasi is observed there with unmatched intensity. The vrata's six days mirror the six days of the campaign, ending in the joy of Soorasamharam, the destruction of Sura.

How the vratam is kept

Devotees undertake the fast from the new moon day of Aippasi, keeping six days of restraint — many take only fruit, milk or a single simple meal, and the strictest fast fully until each evening's worship. Daily practice centres on Murugan puja and the recitation of the Kanda Sashti Kavasam, the beloved Tamil armour-hymn composed by Devaraya Swamigal, along with Subrahmanya Bhujangam and Tiruppugazh songs. At Tiruchendur and at Murugan temples throughout Tamil Nadu, the six evenings carry processions of the deity's battle forms, and on Sashti day the Soorasamharam is enacted in the open — the utsava murti of Murugan, Vel raised, destroying effigies of Surapadman's forms before vast crowds, at Tiruchendur on the very beach. The following day the temples celebrate Tirukalyanam, Murugan's wedding to Deivanai, turning the mood from war to auspicious joy, and devotees break their fast.

Keeping Kanda Sashti in Ottawa & Canada

The vratam transfers naturally to a Canadian home because its heart is fasting and recitation rather than spectacle. Ottawa devotees can keep the six days in late October–November with a simplified fast — fruit and milk, or one sattvik meal daily — and an evening puja to a Murugan or Kartikeya image with the Kanda Sashti Kavasam; recordings make it easy for children to learn the hymn's rolling metre. The site's calendar gives each year's dates; note the six days run on tithi reckoning, so confirm the local ending day. On Soorasamharam evening, many diaspora families watch the live-streamed enactment from Tiruchendur or other major temples. Tamil temples in Canadian cities commonly observe the Sashti with special abhishekams — check your local temple's calendar for their programme.

Questions
What is Soorasamharam?

Soorasamharam is the dramatic enactment, on the sixth day of the vratam, of Murugan destroying the demon Surapadman. At Tiruchendur it is performed on the seashore where tradition places the original battle, and it is followed the next day by Tirukalyanam, Murugan's divine wedding.

Is Kanda Sashti the same as the monthly Sashti fast?

They are related but distinct. Many devotees fast for Murugan on every Sashti tithi through the year, but Kanda Sashti proper is the six-day observance in Aippasi (October–November) that culminates in Soorasamharam — the most important Sashti of the year.
