Undralla Tadde is one of the paired Tadiya observances of the Telugu autumn — this one in Bhadrapada, its sister Atla Tadde following in Ashwayuja — both addressed to Gauri, the golden form of Parvati who won Shiva through her own unwavering tapas. Tradition holds that women who keep her Tadiya fast gain long married happiness, and that unmarried girls who keep it are blessed with good husbands, just as Gauri gained hers. The festival's name comes from its naivedyam: undrallu, the plain steamed dumplings of coarse rice flour familiar from Vinayaka Chavithi, which falls in the bright half of this same month — so the season's beloved offering is carried over to the goddess who is, after all, Ganesha's own mother. Falling in the pleasant weeks after the monsoon's peak, the day has always been as much a festival of young women's play — swings, songs, gatherings — as of fasting, and Telugu folk memory keeps it as a day of courtyard laughter.

The observance begins before first light. Women and girls rise in the small hours, bathe, and take a special early meal, for after dawn the fast begins in earnest and is traditionally kept without food through the day. Hands are patterned with gorintaku (henna), often applied the previous night, and the daylight hours are given to gathering: swings — uyyalalu — are hung from trees or beams, and women take turns swinging, singing the traditional songs of the day. Towards evening the puja is laid: Gauri as a turmeric image or adorned kalasha, worshipped with kumkuma, flowers and the vrata katha. The naivedyam is undrallu — steamed rice-flour dumplings, usually offered in a fixed count by family custom, with some households adding jaggery-filled kudumulu. The fast is then broken, and vayanam of undrallu with thamboolam is given to an elder sumangali for her blessing. For newly married women the first Undralla Tadde is kept with particular festivity.

This vrata needs only a kitchen, a little company and the right tithi. Rice flour for undrallu is stocked by every Indian grocery, and steaming them takes minutes. The pre-dawn meal fits surprisingly well before a Canadian workday; women who cannot fast strictly keep a lightened fast, which family tradition accepts for those working, unwell or expecting. A backyard swing or a park visit with children stands in cheerfully for the uyyala custom, and an evening Gauri puja with a few Telugu friends — each bringing her undrallu for vayanam — recreates the courtyard gathering that is the festival's real warmth.
