Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesha — Parvati's son, shaped by her own hands and brought to life, guardian of her door, whose confrontation with Shiva ended with the elephant head and his elevation as Ganapati, lord of Shiva's hosts, the remover of obstacles worshipped before every beginning. On Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi he is welcomed into homes as an honoured guest in murti form: the pranapratishtha ritual invites his living presence into the clay, and for the days that follow the family hosts the lord himself — morning and evening aarti, fresh flowers, durva grass, and the modaks he loves. The festival's public form, Ganeshotsav, was transformed in the 1890s by Lokmanya Tilak into the great community celebration Maharashtra knows today — neighbourhood pandals, music, and processions that gather everyone equally.

Tradition avoids sighting the moon on this night, recalling the moon's mockery of Ganesha and the curse that followed. The days of hosting follow the household's capacity — a day and a half, three, five, seven, or the full ten — each with morning and evening aarti (Jai Ganesh Deva), Atharvashirsha or Ganesha Pancharatnam recitation, and offerings. On the final day comes visarjan: the murti is carried out with music and "Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi laukar ya" — "come again soon next year" — and immersed in water, the form dissolving while the presence remains.
