What Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrates

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesha — Parvati's son, shaped by her own hands and brought to life, guardian of her door, whose confrontation with Shiva ended with the elephant head and his elevation as Ganapati, lord of Shiva's hosts, the remover of obstacles worshipped before every beginning. On Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi he is welcomed into homes as an honoured guest in murti form: the pranapratishtha ritual invites his living presence into the clay, and for the days that follow the family hosts the lord himself — morning and evening aarti, fresh flowers, durva grass, and the modaks he loves. The festival's public form, Ganeshotsav, was transformed in the 1890s by Lokmanya Tilak into the great community celebration Maharashtra knows today — neighbourhood pandals, music, and processions that gather everyone equally.

From Sthapana to Visarjan

The murti is installed at a chosen muhurta on Chaturthi day — the computed Ottawa timing is in the Festivals & Dates list on this page. Tradition avoids sighting the moon on this night, recalling the moon's mockery of Ganesha and the curse that followed. The days of hosting follow the household's capacity — a day and a half, three, five, seven, or the full ten — each with morning and evening aarti (Jai Ganesh Deva), Atharvashirsha or Ganesha Pancharatnam recitation, and offerings. On the final day comes visarjan: the murti is carried out with music and "Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi laukar ya" — "come again soon next year" — and immersed in water, the form dissolving while the presence remains. Anant Chaturdashi, the traditional tenth day, is listed with its exact Ottawa date on this page.

Ganesh Chaturthi in Ottawa & Canada

The Chaturthi tithi is computed astronomically, so Ottawa's date can differ from India's — the dates here are exact for the Canadian timezone. A home Ganeshotsav is fully possible in Ottawa: many families use a small eco-friendly clay murti, which matters especially in Canada where immersion in rivers and lakes is restricted — the respectful practice here is symbolic visarjan in a bucket or tub of water at home, letting the unbaked clay dissolve, then returning the water to the earth in the garden. Ottawa's mandirs hold Ganesh Chaturthi pujas and community celebrations — see our Hindu temples in Ottawa guide and confirm programmes directly. Modak ingredients (rice flour, jaggery, coconut) are easy to find at local Indian groceries; steamed ukdiche modak is the classic offering.

Questions
When is Ganesh Chaturthi this year in Ottawa?

The exact Ottawa dates for Ganesh Chaturthi and Anant Chaturdashi — computed astronomically for the Canadian timezone — are shown with their next occurrence in the Festivals & Dates list on this page.

How do I do visarjan in Canada?

Immersion in public rivers and lakes is restricted in Canada. The respectful home practice is symbolic visarjan: immerse an unbaked clay murti in a tub of clean water at home, let it dissolve, and return the water to the earth — a garden is ideal. Eco-friendly clay murtis are made exactly for this.

How many days should I keep Ganpati at home?

Whatever your household can host with full attention — a day and a half, three, five, seven or ten days are all traditional. The farewell aarti and visarjan complete the observance whenever you conclude.
