The Ahmedabad Rath Yatra is the great chariot procession of Lord Jagannath from the Jagannath Mandir in Jamalpur through the old city of Ahmedabad, second in fame only to Puri's. It is held on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (June–July), the same day as the Puri Rath Yatra.

Jagannath comes to Gujarat
The Jagannath Mandir at Jamalpur, on the southern edge of Ahmedabad's walled city, grew from a hermitage of sadhus of the Ramananda line, and its Rath Yatra has been taken out annually since the late nineteenth century — making it one of the oldest and largest chariot festivals outside Puri itself. The observance follows the Puri pattern: a fortnight before the yatra, on Jyeshtha Purnima, the deities are bathed in the Jala Yatra ritual and then rest from public view, 'unwell' from their bath, until they emerge renewed for the journey. On Ashadhi Bij, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra leave their sanctum to travel among their people — the whole theology of the festival in a single gesture: the Lord who comes out to those who cannot come to him. In Gujarat the day is doubly auspicious, for Ashadhi Bij is also the Kutchi new year.
The day of the procession
The day begins in the small hours with mangala aarti, followed by the Pahind Vidhi, in which — echoing Puri's Chhera Pahara — the Chief Minister of Gujarat customarily sweeps the chariots' path with a golden broom, the ruler serving as the Lord's humblest servant. Then the three chariots roll out, led by caparisoned elephants, with akhada gymnasts, bhajan mandalis, decorated trucks and tableaux stretching the procession over kilometres. The route threads the dense lanes of the old city — Khadia, Kalupur, Dariapur — and pauses at Saraspur, honoured as the Lord's mosal, his maternal home, where the whole procession is traditionally feted with a community meal called mosalu. Along the way volunteers shower the crowds with prasad of sprouted moong, jambu, cucumber and coconut. By evening the deities return to Jamalpur, welcomed home with lamps and aarti.

The Ahmedabad Rath Yatra belongs to its city — the crush of the old-city lanes, the elephants, the mosalu at Saraspur — and there is no substitute for being there. But the day itself is fully observable from Canada. Gujarati and Odia families alike keep Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya by watching the live telecasts and streams of the Ahmedabad and Puri processions (the time difference puts the morning rituals in Ottawa's overnight hours, with the procession rolling through the Canadian morning). At home, families offer bhajans to Jagannath, prepare the festival's simple prasad of moong and seasonal fruit, and tell children the story of the Lord's yearly journey. How is the Ahmedabad Rath Yatra related to the Puri Rath Yatra?
It is the same festival of Lord Jagannath, held on the same tithi — Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya — and following the same broad ritual pattern, including the bathing festival a fortnight earlier and the sweeping of the chariot path. Puri's yatra is the original; Ahmedabad's, running since the late nineteenth century, is generally counted the largest outside Odisha.
What is the Pahind Vidhi?
Pahind is the Gujarati counterpart of Puri's Chhera Pahara: before the chariots move, the Chief Minister of Gujarat customarily sweeps their path with a golden broom. The gesture declares that before Jagannath, the highest authority in the land is simply a servant.
Why does the procession stop at Saraspur?
Saraspur is honoured as the mosal — the maternal home — of Lord Jagannath in Ahmedabad tradition. When the procession arrives, the neighbourhood receives the deities and the entire entourage as family, offering the mosalu feast, one of the festival's most beloved episodes.
