Somvar Vrat Katha (Monday Fast of Lord Shiva)

Vrat KathaShivaTraditionalHindi

The katha read at every Monday fast of Lord Shiva — how a childless merchant's devotion moved Parvati to plead for him, how a son was granted with only twelve years of life, and how the boy's honesty, his uncle's steadfastness and Parvati's compassion led Shiva to give him back his life.

How the Vrat Is Kept

The Monday vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. It may be begun on any Monday, but the first Monday of Shravan is considered most auspicious. Many devotees keep it every Monday throughout life, while some keep a fixed number of Mondays according to their vow and then perform the udyapan. On Monday, bathe in the morning, put on clean clothes and offer water, milk and Ganga water on the Shivling. Worship Shiva and Parvati with bel leaves, unbroken rice, white flowers, sandal paste, incense and a lamp, and chant "Om Namah Shivaya". Fast through the day; by tradition the fast is kept until the third part of the day and one meal is taken after the evening worship, without salt. Those who cannot keep a full fast may take fruit. After the worship, sit with the family and hear or read this katha, perform Shiva's aarti and share the prasad. At the udyapan, Shiva and Parvati are worshipped specially, and a Brahmin is fed and given charity according to one's means.

The Childless Merchant and Parvati's Plea

In a certain city there lived a wealthy merchant. His home lacked nothing in wealth or grain; he had servants, and his trade spread far and wide. Yet his heart was always heavy, for he had no child. Day and night he was sunk in the worry of who would carry on his family and his wealth after him. The merchant was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. Wishing for a son, he fasted faithfully every Monday, went to the Shiva temple in the evening to worship Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, and lit a ghee lamp in the temple. For years this rule of his was not broken even once. Seeing his unbroken devotion, Mother Parvati's heart melted one day. She said to Lord Shiva: "My lord, how true a devotee of Yours this merchant is. For years he has kept Your vrat and worship faithfully. Please fulfil his wish." Lord Shiva said: "O Parvati, this world is a field of action. As a farmer reaps the crop of whatever seed he sows in his field, so a person receives fruit according to his deeds. The joy of children is simply not written in this merchant's fate." But Mother Parvati did not give up her plea. She said: "Lord, if You do not remove the sorrow even of Your true devotee, why would people worship You? He must surely receive the fruit of his devotion." As the Mother asked again and again, Lord Shiva said: "O Devi, at your urging I grant him the boon of a son — but that boy's life will be only twelve years." That very night Lord Shiva appeared to the merchant in a dream and told him all this. (As versions differ, in some pothis the merchant, sitting in the temple, himself overhears this conversation between Shiva and Parvati.) The merchant felt neither great joy nor sorrow. He thought, "As the Lord wills." He went on keeping the Monday vrat and worship faithfully as before, and did not reveal the secret even to his wife.

The Son Is Born and Sent to Kashi

Some time later, by Lord Shiva's grace, the merchant's wife conceived, and in the tenth month she gave birth to a most beautiful son. Great rejoicing filled the merchant's house; congratulations rang out and charity was given. But the secret of the boy's short life was hidden in the merchant's heart, so outwardly he showed joy and inwardly left everything to the Lord. The boy grew day by day and reached the age of eleven. Then the merchant's wife said: "My lord, our son is grown now; we should arrange his marriage." The merchant said: "Not yet. First I will send him to Kashi to study." The merchant called his wife's brother, the boy's maternal uncle, gave him a great deal of money and said: "Take this boy to Kashi to be educated. Wherever you stop on the way, perform a yajna, feed the Brahmins and give them dakshina as you go." The uncle agreed, and uncle and nephew set off towards Kashi, performing yajnas and feeding Brahmins along the way.

The Wedding and the Message on the Veil

Travelling on, they reached a city. That day the daughter of its king was to be married, and a wedding party had come from another kingdom. But the prince who was to be the groom was blind in one eye. The prince's father was very anxious that if the bride's family learned of this they would refuse the marriage and he would be greatly shamed. Just then that king's eye fell on the merchant's handsome son, who was staying there with his uncle. The king thought: "Why not make this boy the groom for the ceremony? Once the marriage is done I will give him money and send him off, and take the princess back to my city." He spoke to the uncle and promised him a great deal of money. Out of greed for the money the uncle agreed. The merchant's son was dressed in the groom's clothes and seated in the wedding canopy, and his marriage to the princess was completed with all the rites. But the boy was true of heart. It did not sit right with him that an innocent girl should be deceived. As he was leaving, he found a moment and wrote on the edge of the princess's veil: "Your marriage has been with me, but the prince with whom you will be sent away is blind in one eye. I am going to Kashi to study." At the time of farewell the princess read what was written on her veil, and flatly refused to go with the one-eyed prince, telling her parents everything. The king did not send his daughter away, and the wedding party went back empty-handed. Meanwhile the uncle and nephew went on their way and reached Kashi.

Death at Twelve and Shiva's Gift of Life

Reaching Kashi, the uncle began a yajna, and the boy took up his studies. Time passed, and the day came when the boy completed twelve years. On that day too the yajna was in progress. Suddenly the boy said to his uncle: "Uncle, I don't feel well today." The uncle said: "Go inside and rest a little." The boy went in and lay down, and, as Shiva's boon had decreed, his life left him a short while later. Some time afterwards the uncle came inside and found his nephew dead. It was as though a thunderbolt had struck his heart. But he thought: "If I begin weeping and crying out now, the yajna will be left incomplete and the Brahmins will go away unfed." So he held back his tears, patiently completed the yajna, fed the Brahmins, gave them dakshina and saw them off with respect. When everyone had gone, he sat beside his nephew's body and broke into bitter lamentation. It so happened that at that very moment Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were passing that way. Hearing the pitiful weeping, Mother Parvati said: "My lord, someone is weeping in great sorrow. Come, remove his grief." When they arrived, Lord Shiva said: "O Parvati, this is the son of that same merchant to whom, at your request, I granted a son of twelve years' life. His span is complete." Mother Parvati's motherly heart was stirred. She said: "Lord, his parents have vowed that if their son does not return they too will give up their lives. That merchant still keeps Your vrat and worship every Monday. Grant this boy the gift of life, or the whole family of that devotee will be destroyed." Considering the Mother's compassionate plea and the merchant's devotion, Lord Shiva was pleased, and granting the boy a long life, He brought him back to life. The boy sat up as though waking from deep sleep. Shiva and Parvati vanished from that place, and there was no limit to the uncle's joy.

The Return Home and the Reunion

When the boy's education was complete, uncle and nephew set out back towards their own city. On the way they came again to the city where the boy had been married to the princess. There too they performed a yajna and fed the Brahmins. The moment the king saw the boy he recognised him as the young man to whom his daughter had been married. The king took them to his palace with great honour, entertained them for several days, and then, giving much wealth, clothing, ornaments, attendants and a dowry, sent his daughter away with the young man. The princess too was overjoyed to have found her true husband. Meanwhile the merchant and his wife had grown desperate waiting for their son's return. They had resolved to sit on the roof of their house watching for him, and if news came that he was no more, to throw themselves down from there and give up their lives. They had almost given up food and water. Nearing the city, the uncle went ahead and brought the merchant the news: "Your son has returned, educated, with a princess as his bride and with great wealth." At first the merchant could not believe it. But when the uncle swore an oath and told him everything, the merchant and his wife, filled with joy, came down from the roof and welcomed their son and daughter-in-law with great celebration. The whole city rejoiced. That very night Lord Shiva appeared to the merchant in a dream and said: "O merchant, I am pleased with your Monday vrat and your hearing of the katha. That is why I have given your son a long life." The merchant bowed to the Lord again and again, and kept the Monday vrat with his family all his life.

The Fruit of the Vrat

Just as Lord Shiva, pleased by the merchant's devotion, gave his son a life longer than fate had written, so whoever, woman or man, keeps the Monday vrat with faith and reads or hears this katha has every sorrow removed and every wish fulfilled. The joy of children, good health, plenty and peace remain in that home. In this katha the uncle's steadfastness, the boy's truthfulness and Mother Parvati's compassion all teach us: do not leave the Lord's work unfinished, deceive no one, and keep faith in the Lord even in sorrow. Hail Lord Shiva-Shankar! Hail Mother Parvati! Har Har Mahadev!
When it is recited: Read on every Monday of the weekly Somvar vrat, and especially on the Mondays of Shravan, after the evening worship of Shiva and Parvati.
Traditional significance: The weekly Monday vrat is kept for the well-being of the family, for children and their long life, for a good marriage and for peace of mind. This katha shows that steady, unselfish devotion is never wasted: Shiva rewards it even beyond what fate had written, and Parvati, the compassionate Mother, intercedes for the devotee. It also honours truthfulness — the boy will not let a princess be deceived.
Questions
How is the weekly Monday vrat different from Solah Somvar?

The weekly Somvar vrat can be kept every Monday for as long as one wishes, often for life, and this katha is read each time. Solah Somvar is a fixed vow of sixteen consecutive Mondays with its own katha and an udyapan on the seventeenth.

What can be eaten on the Monday fast?

Traditionally a single meal without salt is taken after the evening worship of Shiva. Those who cannot fast fully may take fruit, milk or other phalahar during the day.

When is the best time to begin?

Any Monday is fine, but the first Monday of Shravan is considered especially auspicious for beginning the Somvar vrat.
