The Priest's Curse and the Cure
Once, wandering the earth with Parvati, Lord Shiva stopped to rest in a beautiful Shiva temple in the city of Amravati. There Parvati wished to play a game of chausar with Shiva. As the game began she asked the temple priest, "Tell us — who will win?" Without thinking, the priest replied, "Mahadev will win." But Parvati won the game, and angered by his careless untruth, she cursed the priest to become a leper.
The priest suffered a long time. One day apsaras from heaven came to worship at that temple, and moved by his misery they taught him the vrat of the sixteen Mondays: each Monday, after bathing, worship Shiva; prepare churma from half a measure of wheat flour with ghee and jaggery, offer it and divide it into three parts as prasad; eat only once that day; and after sixteen Mondays perform the udyapan on the seventeenth. The priest kept the vrat with faith, and by Shiva's grace was fully cured.
From Parvati to Kartikeya to the Brahmin Youth
Some time later Parvati returned to that temple and, astonished to find the priest in perfect health, asked how it had happened. He recounted the greatness of the sixteen-Mondays vrat. Pleased, Parvati herself kept the vrat — and by its power her estranged son Kartikeya returned of his own accord and became devoted to his mother.
Learning the reason, Kartikeya too kept the vrat, and his long-lost Brahmin friend was restored to him. That Brahmin friend then kept the vrat wishing for marriage. Its power took him to a foreign kingdom where the king had staged his daughter's swayamvar with a vow: the royal elephant would garland the man destined to wed the princess. The elephant placed the garland around the Brahmin youth's neck, and he was married to the princess with great celebration.
The Princess, the King and the Forgotten Vrat
The princess asked her husband what merit had made the elephant choose him, and hearing of the sixteen Mondays she kept the vrat wishing for a son — and a virtuous son was born. Grown, the son kept the vrat wishing for a kingdom, and soon an aged king, seeking a worthy heir, married his daughter to him and entrusted him the realm.
Even as king, the young man kept every Monday's vrat. One Monday he asked the queen to send the puja materials to the temple, but she, thinking the vrat pointless, did not send them. As the worship ended, a voice from the sky declared: "O King, the queen has dishonoured the vrat — send her from the kingdom, or the kingdom will perish." The helpless king sent the queen away. She wandered from door to door, and wherever she took shelter, the fault of the slighted vrat followed and no comfort lasted. At last she reached the temple of that same priest, who recognised her plight and had her perform the sixteen-Mondays vrat with full rites. By its power the king remembered his queen, sought her out and brought her back with honour. They kept the vrat together all their lives, lived in happiness, and attained the abode of Shiva at the end.
Whoever keeps the sixteen-Mondays vrat with faith and hears this katha finds every right wish fulfilled by the grace of Shiva and Parvati.
When it is recited: Read on each of the sixteen consecutive Mondays of the vrat, usually begun in Shravan or on any auspicious Monday, with the udyapan (completion rite) on the seventeenth Monday.
Traditional significance: The Solah Somvar vrat is kept for a worthy spouse, family harmony, health and the fulfilment of deep wishes. The katha's chain of stories teaches two things: the vrat's power works for anyone who keeps it sincerely, and neglecting or dishonouring it — even by a queen — brings its own correction until the vrat is honoured again.
Questions
When should the Solah Somvar vrat be started?
