How the Vrat Is Kept

Married women keep the Vat Savitri vrat for their husband's long life, an unbroken saubhagya, and the happiness and peace of the household. In North India it is kept on the Amavasya of the month of Jyeshtha, while in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of the south the same vrat is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima under the name 'Vat Purnima'. In many families women fast for three days, from Trayodashi to Amavasya, as Savitri herself did; in most homes the single day's fast on Amavasya is the custom. On the day of the vrat, after an early bath, women put on clean or new clothes, adorn themselves fully as married women, and, taking water in the hand, make the sankalpa: "I am keeping the Vat Savitri vrat for my husband's long life and unbroken good fortune." The puja thali is laid with a pot of water, roli, turmeric, kumkum, unbroken rice, raw cotton thread or kalava, chana soaked overnight, seasonal fruit (especially mangoes), flowers, incense, a ghee lamp, sweets, puris and gulgule, a bamboo hand-fan and the articles of suhag. In many homes an image or picture of Satyavan and Savitri is placed in a small bamboo basket. The women then go to a banyan (vat) tree. They pour water at its roots, offer roli, turmeric, rice, flowers and soaked chana, light the lamp, and walk around the tree winding raw thread about its trunk — seven, twenty-one or one hundred and eight times, as the family custom is. The vat deity and Satyavan-Savitri are then fanned with the bamboo fan. After the circumambulation the women sit together, and an elder of the house or a priest narrates this katha with full attention; the listeners hold a few grains of rice or soaked chana in their hands while they hear it. When the katha is complete, a 'bayana' of fruit, soaked chana, cloth and suhag articles is given to the mother-in-law or another senior married woman of the family; her feet are touched and her blessings received. Following the household's custom, the fast is broken by eating a tender banyan shoot with soaked chana, or with a meal of fruit in the evening.

King Ashwapati's Long Worship

This is a tale of very ancient times. In the land of Madra ruled a deeply righteous king named Ashwapati. He was truthful and forgiving, master of his senses, and a man who honoured brahmins, sages and holy men. His people looked on him as a father, and his kingdom lacked nothing. Yet a deep sorrow lay hidden in the king's heart — he had no child. As his years advanced, the worry grew heavier: who would keep the lamp of his line burning after him? Longing for a child, the king took a vow of strict observances. He reduced his food to very little, kept brahmacharya and began the worship of the goddess Savitri. Every day, chanting the Savitri mantra, he offered a hundred thousand oblations into the fire, and late in the day he contented himself with a little plain food. In this way a full eighteen years went by. The king's body grew thin, but his discipline and his faith did not waver by a hair's breadth. As soon as the eighteenth year was complete, the goddess Savitri, well pleased, appeared out of the sacrificial fire. Her radiance was like the rising sun. The goddess spoke sweetly: "O king! I am greatly pleased with your restraint, your austerity and your true devotion. Ask for whatever wish is in your heart." With folded hands and eyes full of tears the king replied: "Mother! I have everything except a child. Grant me offspring who will carry my family forward." The goddess said: "O king, I had already placed this wish of yours before Lord Brahma. By his grace a supremely radiant daughter will soon be born in your house. Ask nothing further about this, for it is the ordinance of the Creator." Saying this, the goddess vanished, and the king returned to his capital with a glad heart.

Savitri's Birth and the Search for a Husband

Some time later the king's senior queen, a princess of the land of Malava, conceived, and in due time she gave birth to an exceedingly beautiful daughter. Joy filled the palace. Because the child had been granted by the goddess Savitri's grace, as the fruit of worship with the Savitri mantra, the king, with the brahmins' counsel, named her 'Savitri' as well. As the moon of the bright fortnight grows day by day, so Savitri grew. When she reached youth, it seemed as if a daughter of the gods had come down to earth — eyes like lotuses, a complexion like burnished gold, and, greater still, her intelligence, humility and inner radiance. But her radiance was so intense that no prince dared to come forward with an offer of marriage. Whoever saw her felt himself unworthy and quietly went away. One day Savitri, having completed a fast and bathed, came to her father carrying the prasad of her worship of the gods and bowed at his feet. Seeing his daughter of marriageable age, and no suitor yet come, the king's mind filled with worry. He said tenderly: "Daughter, the time for your marriage has come, yet no one comes to ask for your hand. The scriptures say that a father who does not see his daughter married in good time incurs blame. So I give you leave to go yourself and seek a husband worthy of your virtues. Whomever you choose, to him I shall give you in marriage." Accepting her father's command with reverence, Savitri set out in a golden chariot with aged and trusted ministers. She travelled through many kingdoms, visited the peaceful forest retreats of royal sages and saw many places of pilgrimage. Wherever she went she bowed to the elders, received the blessings of the rishis and gave gifts to the brahmins. In this way she journeyed for many days in search of a husband worthy of her.

Narada's Warning

One day King Ashwapati sat in his court in conversation with the divine sage Narada. Just then Savitri returned with the ministers from her journey and bowed at the feet of both her father and Narada. Seeing her, Narada asked: "O king, where is this daughter of yours coming from? She is of marriageable age — why has she not yet been married?" The king explained that she had gone for that very purpose, the search for a husband, and said to Savitri: "Daughter, tell the divine sage about the one you have chosen." With modesty and humility Savitri said: "Father, in the land of Shalva there was a righteous king named Dyumatsena. By a turn of fate he lost the sight of his eyes. Taking advantage of his helplessness, an old enemy seized his kingdom. Then he went into the forest with his queen and his little son, and there they began to live like ascetics. That son of his, who has grown up in the forest, is Satyavan. In my heart I have accepted him as my husband." Hearing this, Narada's face grew grave. He said: "O king, it is a matter of great sorrow that Savitri has unknowingly chosen Satyavan." Alarmed, the king asked: "Divine sage, is there some lack in Satyavan? Is he without virtue?" Narada replied: "No, O king! Satyavan is a treasury of virtues. He is radiant like the sun, wise like Brihaspati, brave like Indra and patient like the earth. He is generous, charitable, truthful and most handsome to look upon. Because he always speaks the truth, his parents named him Satyavan. As a child he loved horses so much that he would model horses out of clay and draw pictures of them, and so people also call him 'Chitrashva'. There is only one flaw in him, but it outweighs all his virtues: exactly one year from today his span of life will be complete, and he will leave his body." At these words the king's heart trembled. He said to Savitri: "Daughter, you have heard the divine sage. Go again and choose some other worthy husband." In a calm but firm voice Savitri answered: "Father, there are some things in life that happen only once. A daughter is given only once; the gift of a daughter in marriage is made only once; and the words 'I have given' are spoken only once. Whether Satyavan's life be long or short, whether he be virtuous or not, I have once chosen him in my heart as my husband; now I will choose no other. Every deed is first settled in the mind, then spoken by the tongue, and then carried out in action. My mind has decided, and for me that is the proof." Seeing Savitri's firmness, Narada said: "O king, your daughter's resolve is unshakeable. It is not possible to turn her from this path of dharma. Virtues like Satyavan's are hard to find in anyone else, so give your daughter in marriage gladly." Saying this and blessing them all, the divine sage Narada departed for the heavens.

The Marriage and Life in the Forest

Having received the divine sage's approval, King Ashwapati gathered everything needed for the wedding and set out, with priests, brahmins and Savitri, for the forest where King Dyumatsena's ashram stood. Near the ashram he stepped down from his chariot and went forward on foot. He saw the blind King Dyumatsena seated on a mat of kusha grass beneath a sal tree. Ashwapati bowed respectfully and introduced himself. Dyumatsena honoured his guest with water, a seat and the gift of a cow, and asked the reason for his coming. Ashwapati said: "Royal sage, this is my daughter Savitri. I wish you to accept her as your daughter-in-law." Dyumatsena replied: "O king, we have been driven from our kingdom, and we live in the forest like ascetics, eating roots and fruit. How will your princess, raised in palaces, bear the hardships of the forest?" Ashwapati answered: "Happiness and sorrow come and go; I know this, and so does my daughter. We have come to you with our minds fully made up — do not disappoint us." Then Dyumatsena said gladly: "To tell the truth, I too had long wished for this alliance, but I hesitated because my kingdom had been taken. Today my old wish is fulfilling itself." Then, with all the sages of the ashram called together, the marriage of Satyavan and Savitri was performed according to the rites of the scriptures. King Ashwapati gave his daughter fitting ornaments and garments, bade her farewell and returned to his kingdom with a contented heart. Satyavan too rejoiced at having won a wife endowed with every virtue. As soon as her father had left, Savitri took off all her costly ornaments and royal garments and put on clothes of bark and ochre cloth. With her spirit of service, her humility and her sweet speech she won every heart. She tended her mother-in-law with her own hands and looked after her clothes and meals; she revered her blind father-in-law like a deity and shared in every task of his; toward her husband she was all love, gentle words and a true heart. Everyone in the ashram praised her without tiring. Yet amid all this happiness, Narada's words echoed in Savitri's mind day and night. She said nothing to anyone, but silently she counted every passing day.

The Three-Night Fast and the Fateful Morning

Slowly time passed, and the day of which Narada had spoken drew near. When only four days of Satyavan's life remained, Savitri resolved upon a severe vow of three days and three nights. She gave up food and water and began to meditate on the Lord, standing day and night. Seeing his daughter-in-law's hard vow, her father-in-law Dyumatsena said with sorrow: "Daughter, this is a very harsh observance. To stand for three nights without food is no ordinary thing." Savitri said humbly: "Father, do not worry. I have taken this vow with firm resolve, and by the Lord's grace I shall surely complete it." Then Dyumatsena said: "I could never ask you to break a vow. My blessing is that you complete it well." On the third night Savitri did not so much as close her eyes. A single thought filled her mind: "Tomorrow is the day." As the sun rose on the fourth day she bathed, performed the fire offering, and then bowed at the feet of her parents-in-law and all the aged sages of the ashram. All of them blessed her with one voice: "May your good fortune be unbroken! May you never be widowed!" Savitri held fast to that blessing in her heart and prayed that it might be so. The period of the vow was over, so her parents-in-law said: "Daughter, eat something now." Savitri replied: "I have resolved in my mind that I will eat only after the sun has set." Just then Satyavan set off for the forest with his axe on his shoulder, to bring fruit, flowers and firewood for the sacrifice. Savitri said at once: "Today I will come with you." Satyavan said: "Beloved, you have never been to the forest before. The path is hard, and you are already weak from three days of fasting. How will you walk?" Savitri said: "The fast has not tired me. My heart is eager to go; do not refuse me." Satyavan said: "If that is so, take leave of my parents, so that no blame falls on me." Savitri went to her parents-in-law, bowed, and said: "My husband is going into the forest for fruit and firewood. Today I wish to go with him. I have lived in the ashram for a year, and I have not yet even seen the flowers blooming in the forest." Dyumatsena said: "Our daughter-in-law has never asked us for anything until today. Let this wish of hers be fulfilled." Given leave, Savitri set out with her husband. Outwardly she was smiling, but within, her heart burned in the fire of anxiety.

Under the Banyan: Yamaraj Comes

As they walked through the forest, Satyavan lovingly showed Savitri the dancing peacocks, the murmuring rivers and the trees laden with blossoms. Savitri answered his every word, but her eyes did not leave her husband's face for a moment. Remembering Narada's words, she was alert every instant to protect him. Satyavan first gathered fruit and filled the basket, and then began to cut wood. As he chopped, his body was drenched with sweat and suddenly a sharp pain rose in his head. He came to Savitri and said: "Beloved, I do not know why, but today my head aches terribly. All my limbs feel as if they are breaking and I cannot stay on my feet. I want to sleep for a while." Savitri understood that the very hour had arrived. She sat down in the shade of a huge banyan tree standing close by and took her husband's head into her lap. Within moments she saw a divine being standing before her. He was tall and dark of body, with red eyes; he wore red garments and a crown, and he shone with a brilliance like the sun. In his hand was a noose, and he was gazing steadily at Satyavan. Savitri gently laid her husband's head on the ground, rose, and with a trembling heart and folded hands said: "You appear to be a god. Please tell me, who are you, and what do you want?" The being said: "Savitri, you are devoted to your husband and rich in austerity; that is why I speak with you — otherwise mortals cannot even see me. I am Yamaraj. Your husband's span of life is complete; I have come to take him." Savitri asked: "Lord, I have heard that your messengers come to take mortals away. Why have you come yourself today?" Yamaraj said: "Satyavan is righteous, handsome and an ocean of virtues. It is not fitting for my messengers to take such a holy soul, so I have come myself." Saying this, Yamaraj bound in his noose the thumb-sized being within Satyavan's body and drew it out by force. Satyavan's body lay beneath the tree, lifeless, motionless and without lustre. Yamaraj set off toward the south carrying that soul. Though shaken with grief, Savitri did not lose her composure — leaving her husband's body in the banyan's shade, she followed close behind Yamaraj.

The Dialogue of Dharma and the Boons

After going some distance, Yamaraj turned and saw Savitri following behind him. He said: "Savitri, go back and perform your husband's last rites. You have fulfilled a wife's duty. You have come as far as any living person can come." Savitri folded her hands and said: "Lord, wherever my husband is taken, or wherever he goes of his own accord, there I too must go — this is the eternal dharma. By the strength of austerity, by service to my elders, by love for my husband and by your grace, my path is not blocked anywhere. The wise say that friendship arises between good people when they have walked seven steps together. By the right of that friendship I say something to you: for a human being dharma is the highest thing in the world, and the good have declared the dharma of the householder to be excellent." Yamaraj was pleased with her words and said: "Your words are full of meaning and sweet to hear. Ask any one boon, except Satyavan's life." Savitri said: "My father-in-law, blinded and driven from his kingdom, lives in the forest. By your grace may the light of his eyes return, and may he become as strong as fire and the sun." Yamaraj said: "Tathastu — so be it. Now you are tired; go back." Still Savitri kept walking behind him and said: "How can I be tired while I am near my husband? Where he is going, there is my path too. And, Lord, even a single meeting with the good is very precious, and friendship made with them never goes in vain. So one should always keep the company of the good." Yamaraj said: "This saying of yours is wholesome and increases wisdom. Ask a second boon, except Satyavan's life." Savitri said: "May my father-in-law regain his stolen kingdom, and may he never stray from his dharma." Yamaraj said: "So it shall be. He will soon have his kingdom back. Now go back." Yamaraj went on, but Savitri still walked with him and said: "Lord, you keep all beings in restraint not by your own whim but by law; that is why you are called Yama. The eternal dharma of the good is this: to bear no ill will toward any creature in thought, word or deed, to show kindness to all and to give. The good show mercy even to an enemy who comes to them." Yamaraj said: "As water is to the thirsty, so your words are a comfort to me. Ask a third boon, except Satyavan's life." Savitri said: "My father has no son. May he have a hundred sons to carry his line forward." Yamaraj said: "So be it! Your father will have a hundred radiant sons. Now you have come very far; go back." Savitri said: "Because I am near my husband, this distance does not feel like distance; my mind is running even further ahead. You are the son of the Sun god Vivasvan, and so you are called Vaivasvata. You deal out justice to all alike, and so you are called Dharmaraj. In this world people trust the good even more than they trust themselves, for the good wish well to all." Yamaraj said: "I have never heard such words from anyone until today. Ask a fourth boon, except Satyavan's life." Savitri said: "May I have from Satyavan a hundred strong and valiant sons, who will bring glory to our family." Without pausing to consider, Yamaraj said: "So be it! You shall have a hundred mighty sons." And he walked on again. Still Savitri followed him and said: "The conduct of the good is ever steady in dharma. They neither sink in sorrow nor swell with pride. By the power of truth the sun moves, and by the austerity of the good the earth is upheld." Yamaraj, greatly pleased, said: "Devoted wife, the more you speak words full of dharma, the more my reverence for you grows. Now ask for a boon beyond compare." Then Savitri folded her hands and said: "Lord, you have granted me a hundred sons by Satyavan. How can that boon be fulfilled without my husband? So this is what I ask: let Satyavan live. Without my husband I want no happiness, no heaven, no wealth, not even my own life. You yourself granted the boon of sons — let your word be true." Seeing Savitri's wisdom, steadfastness and love for her husband, Dharmaraj smiled. At once he loosened his noose and said joyfully: "Blessed one, here — I set your husband free. He will be healthy and successful and will live with you for four hundred years. Performing sacrifices, he will win fame through dharma. You will have a hundred sons by him, and all of them will be kings. Your father too will have a hundred sons by your mother Malavi." Having granted Savitri these boons, Yamaraj departed for his own realm. (In some tellings — the short folk version commonly recited has only three boons, the third being the hundred sons, and it is bound by that very boon that Yamaraj returns Satyavan's life.)

Satyavan Restored and the Return Home

As soon as Yamaraj had gone, Savitri returned to the place where her husband's body lay beneath the banyan tree. She sat down again and took his head into her lap. In a little while life stirred in Satyavan's body, and he sat up as though waking from a long sleep. He said: "Beloved, I have slept for a long time. Why did you not wake me? And where has that dark man gone who was dragging me away?" Savitri said: "You slept a long while. That being was Yamaraj, who holds all creatures within the law, and now he has gone. Your weariness has passed. Look, night has fallen; if you can stand, let us go home. I will tell you everything tomorrow." Seeing the dark forest, Satyavan grew anxious for his parents: "My parents do not even eat without seeing me. If I am a little late they grow restless. Who knows what state they are in today?" As he spoke, tears flowed from his eyes. Savitri wiped away his tears and said with folded hands: "If I have practised austerity with a true heart, if I have given in charity and never spoken an untruth, then may this night be auspicious for my parents-in-law and for my husband." Then she hung the basket of fruit on a branch, took the axe in her own hand, placed her husband's left arm over her shoulder and walked slowly toward the ashram in the moonlight. Meanwhile, something wonderful had happened at the ashram: King Dyumatsena's sight had suddenly returned. But because his son and daughter-in-law had not come back, he and the queen were going from one hermitage to another searching for them in great distress. The sages comforted them: "No harm can come to Satyavan when an ascetic woman like Savitri is with him. He will surely return alive." Just then Satyavan and Savitri reached the ashram. Seeing them, the parents' joy knew no bounds. The sages asked: "Why were you so late today?" Satyavan said: "While cutting wood my head began to ache and I slept for a long time — that is all." Then an aged sage said: "Your father's sight returning so suddenly is no ordinary matter. Savitri knows the secret of it. Daughter, tell us the truth." Then Savitri humbly told them everything — Narada's prophecy, the three-night vow, Yamaraj's coming beneath the banyan tree, her following him, and each of the boons she had received one by one. Hearing it, all the sages praised her: "Daughter, by your virtue, your vow and your wisdom you have saved this family from drowning in a dark ocean of sorrow." Early the next morning ministers and citizens came from the land of Shalva to the ashram and said: "Maharaj, the enemy who seized your kingdom has been killed by his own minister. All the people with one voice want you to be king again. Whether you have your sight or not, you are our king." When they saw that the king's sight had also returned, their joy was boundless. King Dyumatsena returned to his capital with the queen, his son and his daughter-in-law; he was crowned once more, and Satyavan became the crown prince. In due time, as Yamaraj had promised, Savitri had a hundred illustrious sons, and King Ashwapati and Queen Malavi too were blessed with a hundred sons. Thus by her vow and her wisdom Savitri lifted the families of her husband, her father-in-law, her father and her mother — all four — out of sorrow and filled them with happiness and honour.

Why the Banyan Is Worshipped

It was seated in the shade of the banyan tree that Savitri protected her husband's life, and it was beneath that very tree that Satyavan received new life. That is why the banyan tree is worshipped in this vrat, and why the vrat is called 'Vat Savitri'. The scriptures regard the banyan as imperishable and undying. It is believed that Brahma dwells in its roots, Lord Vishnu in its trunk and Lord Shiva in its upper branches, and that the goddess Savitri too resides in this tree. A banyan lives for hundreds of years, so it is a symbol of long life. The aerial roots that hang from its branches reach the earth and become new trunks — a sign that a family's line too should spread in the same way, generation after generation. The raw thread wound around the trunk during the circumambulation stands for the unbreakable resolve with which Savitri held her husband's life fast. The bamboo fan recalls how, in the scorching heat of Jyeshtha, Savitri gave her husband shade and a cool breeze. Behind the offering of soaked chana, and eating them as prasad, lies a folk belief (in some tellings) that Yamaraj returned Satyavan's life in the form of grains of chana, which Savitri brought back and placed in her husband's mouth, and he came back to life. Worshipping the banyan, which gives deep shade in the fierce sun of Jyeshtha, also teaches us that trees are the protectors of our life; to care for them and preserve them is itself a part of dharma.

The Fruit of the Vrat

The married woman who keeps the Vat Savitri vrat with faith and trust, worships and circles the banyan tree, and hears or tells this holy katha, keeps her good fortune unbroken; her husband is blessed with long life, and happiness, peace and the joy of children remain in her home. Just as Savitri, by her truth, steadfastness and wisdom, won over even Yamaraj and filled both families along with her husband with happiness, so may Mother Savitri protect the family of every woman who keeps this vrat. O Mother Savitri! As your marriage remained unbroken, so may everyone's remain unbroken. As your parents-in-law received their sight and their kingdom, so may the elders of every home receive happiness and honour. May the wishes of all be fulfilled — the one who tells this katha, the one who hears it, and the one who answers along. Jai Savitri Mata! Jai Satyavan-Savitri! Jai Vat Devata!
Festivals & Dates
📅 Vat Savitri VratJyeshtha Amavasya (North India) — Jyeshtha Purnima in Maharashtra/Gujarat · Next date for your city

Each link opens our computed festival calendar with exact dates and timings for your city.

When it is recited: Read or narrated at the Vat Savitri puja, after the banyan tree has been worshipped and wound with raw thread — on Jyeshtha Amavasya in North India, and on Jyeshtha Purnima (Vat Purnima) in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of the south.
Traditional significance: Savitri is remembered as the ideal of a wife whose love is joined to wisdom and courage: she does not plead or lament before Death but speaks of dharma until Yamaraj himself is won over. The banyan, under which Satyavan's life returned, is worshipped as the long-lived tree in which Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva dwell. Women keep the vrat for their husband's long life, an unbroken saubhagya and the well-being of both families.
Questions
Why do some families keep Vat Savitri on Amavasya and others on Purnima?

Both follow the same story. North India (amanta and purnimanta regions alike) keeps it on Jyeshtha Amavasya; Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of the south keep it fifteen days later on Jyeshtha Purnima as Vat Purnima. Follow your family's custom — the katha and the worship of the banyan are the same.

What if there is no banyan tree nearby?

Many families abroad worship a small banyan branch or a potted banyan placed at home, or draw a banyan on paper and wind the thread around a stand beside it. The intention of the vrat and hearing the katha are what matter most.

When is the fast broken?

Customs differ. In many North Indian homes the fast is broken after the puja and katha by eating a tender banyan shoot with soaked chana and water; others take a fruit meal in the evening. Women who keep the three-day vrat complete it on Amavasya.
