Veeravati and the False Moon
Long ago a wealthy merchant had seven sons and a single beloved daughter, Veeravati. After her marriage, she kept her first Karva Chauth at her parents' home: taking sargi before dawn, she fasted without food or water. By late afternoon she grew faint with hunger and thirst, and her brothers could not bear to watch her suffer. They lit a lamp in a distant peepal tree and showed her its glow through a sieve — "Look, sister, the moon has risen; offer your arghya and eat." Her sisters-in-law hinted at the truth — "Your moon has risen early; ours has not" — but the innocent Veeravati offered arghya to the false moon and broke her fast.
With the very first morsel came ill omens, and word arrived from her husband's home that he had fallen gravely ill — in many tellings, that he lay as one dead.
The Vrat Restored
Grief-stricken but resolute, Veeravati did not lose heart. In the traditional telling, Indrani (Shachi), consort of Indra, revealed the cause: "You broke the fast by offering arghya before the true moonrise — this is why calamity came. Keep the Chauth fast each month for a year, and when Karva Chauth returns, keep it flawlessly, offering arghya only when the moon itself is seen." Veeravati kept every Chauth of the year, and on Karva Chauth completed the vrat with full rites — the karva pot, the lamp, the sieve and the arghya. Pleased with her devotion, Chauth Mata (Gauri) restored her husband to perfect health — in many versions, to life itself.
Since then, married women keep Karva Chauth from sunrise to moonrise without food or water, view the moon through a sieve, offer arghya, and break the fast with water from their husband's hands. — Jai Chauth Mata! Jai Ganesh ji Maharaj!
The Ancient Precedents
Tradition remembers other precedents of this vrat's power. Draupadi, on Krishna's counsel, kept the Karva Chauth fast while Arjuna performed austerities on the Nilgiri mountain, and the Pandavas' troubles were dispelled. A devoted wife named Karva, by the force of her tapas, compelled Yamaraj himself to spare her husband — and it is from her that the vrat takes its name. And the story of Savitri, who won Satyavan's life back from Yamaraj, is known to all. The essence of every telling is one: a vrat kept with faith and firm resolve bears unfailing fruit.

When it is recited: Read or narrated during the Karva Chauth puja in the late afternoon, before the moonrise sighting. Women listen with the karva (clay pot) and thali before them.
Traditional significance: Karva Chauth falls on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. The katha teaches that the power of the vrat lies in completing it exactly — fasting from sunrise until the moon is actually seen — and in the goodwill of the community of women who keep it together. Ganesh, Gauri and Chauth Mata are invoked as its guardians.
Questions
Why is the moon viewed through a sieve?
The sieve recalls the false moon of the katha — shown through a sieve's mesh — and turns it into a rite of truthfulness: the fasting woman views the real moon through the chhalni with a lamp placed in it, then looks upon her husband's face.
What if the moon is not visible due to clouds?
Tradition allows offering arghya in the direction of the moonrise at the panchang moonrise time for one's city, once the time has passed — the vrat is completed by the time and the intention, not the sighting alone. See our Panchang page for your local moonrise time.
