How the houses are divided, and when this matters most
The problem it solves. A rashi chart treats a whole sign as a whole house. If your lagna falls at 28° of Simha, then a graha at 2° of Kanya is four degrees away from your ascendant — plainly in the first bhava by any ordinary reading — and yet whole-sign files it into the second house. Bhava Chalit uses actual house divisions and puts it where it stands.
Sripati, the classical Indian division. The lagna degree is the midpoint of the first bhava rather than its cusp, and the MC is the midpoint of the tenth. The two arcs between them are cut into three, which gives the intermediate house midpoints, and the boundaries sit halfway between neighbouring midpoints. How often it changes something. Checked over a full year of charts sampled every two hours: at Ottawa 33.8% of graha placements land in a different house than the rashi chart shows, and 88% of charts have at least one graha move.
It matters more the further from the equator you were born. House sizes distort with latitude. Over that same test, houses ranged from 27.4° to 32.6° at Thiruvananthapuram, 20.4° to 39.6° at Ottawa, and 15.8° to 44.2° at Edinburgh — with grahas moving house 26.5%, 33.8% and 42.4% of the time respectively. For a community born across India and living across Canada, that difference is worth seeing rather than assuming.
Which chart is right? Both are read, and traditions differ on how much weight to give each. The common practice is to judge a graha's house from the chalit chart while keeping its sign and dignity from the rashi chart. This page shows you both rather than choosing for you.
