Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha

Vrat KathaParvatiTraditionalHindi

The complete Ahoi Ashtami katha in both its traditional versions: the merchant's wife who unknowingly killed a syahu's cub while digging earth before Diwali, lost her sons and won them back through Ahoi Mata's vrat; and the youngest daughter-in-law who took a curse upon herself, served the sacred cow, saved a garuda bird's chicks and was blessed by the mother syahu across the seven seas.

How the Vrat Is Kept

The Ahoi Ashtami fast is kept on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight of Kartik. It falls about four days after Karva Chauth and about eight days before Diwali. Mothers keep it for their children's long life, health and happiness; those who long for a child also keep it with devotion. The vow is taken after a light meal before sunrise, and then food and water are given up until the stars are seen in the evening. In some families the custom is to break the fast after offering arghya to the moon once it rises, but on this day the moon rises late at night, so most homes complete the fast on sighting the stars. In the afternoon a picture of Ahoi Mata is drawn on the wall with red ochre (geru) or placed on paper. In it are drawn the eight-cornered figure (asht koshthak), the syahu (porcupine) and her young. A karva filled with water is set before the picture, with a reed stalk placed in its spout. Roli, unbroken rice, milk, cooked rice, halwa, puris, sweets and water chestnuts are offered in the puja. In many families a silver Ahoi pendant (syau) and silver beads strung on a thread are worshipped; each year, or for each child, a new bead is added, and the string is worn around the neck until Diwali. After the puja, the katha is heard while holding seven grains of wheat. Then the baya — sweets, fruit, clothes and a gift of money — is given to the mother-in-law or another elder woman of the house, and her feet are touched. In the evening, when the stars come out, arghya is offered to them with water from the karva, the children are blessed, and the fast is broken.

The Merchant's Wife Digs Earth

This is a tale from very long ago. In a certain town lived a merchant. His wife was deeply devout and hard-working. By God's grace they had seven sons, and their laughter filled the house and courtyard. The merchant's wife swelled with joy to see her sons. The month of Kartik came and Diwali drew near. In every house preparations began for plastering and whitewashing. The merchant's wife thought that this time she too would plaster her house with fresh earth and make it beautiful. She took a small hoe and a basket and went to the earth pit in the forest outside the village. At one edge of the pit a syahu (porcupine) had made her burrow, and in it her little young ones lay asleep. The merchant's wife knew nothing of this. She began digging the earth in haste. As she dug, her hoe suddenly struck inside the burrow, and one tiny young syahu died right there from the blow. When the merchant's wife saw the blood-stained hoe and the dead little one, she trembled. The words burst from her: "Hai Ram! What a terrible wrong I have done!" Her heart filled with remorse. With a heavy heart she lifted her basket of earth and returned home, but the sight would not leave her eyes.

The Syahu's Curse and a Mother's Grief

When the mother syahu came back and found her young one dead, she began to wail. In the grief of losing her child she cursed the unknown woman: "Whoever has emptied my lap, may her lap be emptied in the same way." Time went by. Within a single year a mountain of sorrow fell upon the merchant's house. One by one, all seven of his sons passed away. (In another telling, some booklets say the sons went away and no news of them was ever heard.) The courtyard that had rung with children's laughter fell silent. The merchant and his wife sank into grief. Again and again the merchant's wife remembered what had happened at the earth pit. She would think, "I did nothing on purpose, yet a mother's child died by my hand. Perhaps this is the fruit of that." Her sorrow grew so great that one day she thought, what purpose is left in this life? — and she began to think of ending it.

The Counsel of the Elder Women

Seeing her in this state, some elder women of the village came to her. They lovingly took her hand and asked why she was so sorrowful. Weeping, the merchant's wife told them everything — how, while digging earth, a young syahu had died without her knowing, and how after that her seven sons had been taken from her. One old woman comforted her and said, "Daughter, you have owned your mistake with a true heart and you repent of it. By that alone half your sin is already washed away. Giving up your life will achieve nothing. Now do one thing — on Kartik Krishna Ashtami keep the vrat of Ahoi Bhagwati. She is a form of Mother Parvati herself and protects children. Draw on the wall a picture of Ahoi Mata with the syahu and her young, worship them, and with a true heart ask forgiveness of the mother syahu too." Another old woman said, "Stay without water all day, hear the katha in the evening, and offer arghya when you see the stars. The Mother is very merciful; if your heart is true, she will turn even the impossible into the possible."

The Vrat and the Sons Restored

The merchant's wife found new strength in their words. When Kartik Krishna Ashtami came, she bathed at dawn and took the vow of the fast. All day she took neither food nor water. In the afternoon she drew Ahoi Mata on the wall with red ochre, drew the syahu and her young beside her, filled a karva with water and set it in front. In the evening she worshipped with full devotion and prayed in tears: "O Ahoi Mata! Unknowingly I have committed a great wrong. O Mother Syahu, forgive me. I know what it is to grieve for a child. Now, as long as I live, I will never knowingly cause suffering to any creature." Then she heard the katha, and when the stars came out she offered them arghya and completed the fast. She also vowed to keep this vrat every year. Ahoi Mata was pleased by her true repentance and her vrat. Appearing before her, the Mother said, "Daughter, your heart has become pure. Your children are given back to you; they will live long and be happy." By the Mother's grace all seven of the merchant's wife's sons came back into her lap (in another telling, the sons who had gone to distant lands came home safe and sound). The house was filled with joy once more. Since then mothers keep the vrat of Ahoi Mata on Kartik Krishna Ashtami for the protection and long life of their children.

The Second Katha: The Youngest Daughter-in-Law's Sacrifice

In many homes another katha is also told on Ahoi Ashtami. A merchant had seven sons, seven daughters-in-law and one daughter. Before Diwali, the seven daughters-in-law went to the forest to fetch earth for plastering the house, and their sister-in-law — the merchant's daughter — went along with them. Where the daughter was digging was the home of a syahu, where her young ones lived. As she dug, one of the young syahus was killed by the daughter's hoe. In anger and grief the mother syahu said, "You have taken my child; I will bind your womb — your children too shall not live." The daughter trembled with fear. One by one she begged her sisters-in-law: "Bhabhi, take this curse upon your own womb in my place." The elder sisters-in-law flatly refused. At last she went to the youngest. The youngest daughter-in-law thought, "If I too refuse, this girl will be unhappy all her life, and my mother-in-law's heart will break as well." For her sister-in-law's sake she took the curse upon herself. After that, every child born to the youngest daughter-in-law passed away within seven days. In this way seven children were taken from her, one after another. Her life came to be spent in tears.

Serving the Sacred Cow

In her sorrow the youngest daughter-in-law called a wise pandit ji, told him her suffering and asked for a remedy. The pandit ji reflected and said, "Daughter, serve the Surahi cow (a sacred cow of the line of Kamadhenu). She is a friend of Mother Syahu. If she is pleased, she can take you to Mother Syahu, and it is she alone who can unbind your womb." From that day the youngest daughter-in-law rose every day in the dark before dawn and quietly swept and cleaned the Surahi cow's place, cleared away the dung, and set out fresh fodder and water. She did this service so secretly that no one knew of it. After some days the cow wondered, "Who comes every morning and serves me so well?" One day she stayed awake at dawn and saw the youngest daughter-in-law at her service. Pleased, the cow said, "Daughter, for so many days you have served me without any thought of reward. Tell me, what do you wish for?" The youngest daughter-in-law joined her palms and said, "Mother, Mother Syahu has bound my womb, so none of my children survive. Take me to her, so that I may ask her forgiveness." The cow said, "She lives beyond the seven seas; but for your service I will surely take you there."

The Garuda Bird and the Seven Seas

The Surahi cow set out, taking the youngest daughter-in-law with her. After a long journey, both of them, tired, sat down to rest in the shade of a great tree on the seashore. In that tree was the nest of a garuda bird (garud pankhini), with her little chicks in it. At that moment their mother had gone out to fetch food. Just then the youngest daughter-in-law saw a black snake climbing the tree towards the nest, about to strike the chicks. She did not hesitate for a moment. With a stick lying nearby she killed the snake and covered it over to one side. The chicks' lives were saved, but the snake's blood was left spattered about. In a little while the garuda bird returned. Seeing the blood, she thought this woman had killed her chicks. In fury she began striking the youngest daughter-in-law with her beak. Even while bearing the blows, the youngest daughter-in-law said calmly, "Mother, first look at your chicks. I have killed not them, but the snake that came to bite them." The garuda bird saw her chicks safe in the nest, and saw the dead snake lying covered. She was deeply ashamed, and gladly said, "You have protected my children. Tell me, what shall I do for you?" The youngest daughter-in-law told her that she had to go to Mother Syahu beyond the seven seas. The garuda bird said, "For me that is easy." Seating both the youngest daughter-in-law and the Surahi cow upon her back, she carried them across the seven seas to Mother Syahu's door.

Mother Syahu's Blessing

When Mother Syahu saw her friend the Surahi cow she was very glad and welcomed her. Then she looked at the youngest daughter-in-law. The Surahi cow told her how this woman had served her selflessly for so many days, and how on the way she had saved the lives of the garuda bird's chicks. At that time Mother Syahu's head was itching badly. Without being asked, the youngest daughter-in-law sat beside her and very lovingly cleaned her head, untangled her hair and gave her relief. Seeing her service, humility and compassion, Mother Syahu's heart melted. Mother Syahu said, "Daughter, you bore suffering for others, protected the children of others, and served without selfish motive. Go — I take back my curse. You shall have seven sons and seven daughters-in-law; your home shall be full and flourishing." The youngest daughter-in-law touched Mother Syahu's feet and returned home with the garuda bird and the Surahi cow. Reaching home, she saw her courtyard filled with seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. Her eyes filled with joy. In gratitude, on Kartik Krishna Ashtami she worshipped Ahoi Mata and Mother Syahu, made seven Ahoi images and worshipped them, and shared prasad with everyone. (In another telling, some traditions begin this story with the mistake of the merchant's daughters-in-law themselves rather than the daughter; but the heart of the youngest daughter-in-law's sacrifice and service is the same in all.)

The Fruit of the Vrat

The mother who keeps the vrat of Ahoi Mata with faith on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, hears the katha remembering Mother Syahu, and offers arghya on seeing the stars — her children live long, healthy and happy, and no misfortune befalls her home. Ahoi Mata also fills the lap of the one who longs for a child. That is why it is said that Ahoi Mata turns the impossible into the possible. These stories also teach that a mistake made unknowingly should be truly repented, that we must show mercy to every creature, and that selfless service is never wasted. When the katha is complete, offer the wheat grains in your hand to Ahoi Mata, give the baya to your mother-in-law, and when the stars appear, offer arghya and bless your children. Say: Victory to Ahoi Mata! Victory to Mother Syahu! As the laps of the merchant's wife and the youngest daughter-in-law were filled, so may everyone's be!

📅 Ahoi AshtamiKartik Krishna Ashtami (Oct–Nov) · With star-sighting time for your city

Each link opens our computed festival calendar with exact dates and timings for your city.

When it is recited: Read by mothers at the Ahoi Ashtami puja in the evening, before the Ahoi Mata picture with the syahu and her cubs, before sighting the stars.
Traditional significance: Ahoi Ashtami falls on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, about a week before Diwali. Mothers fast from sunrise until the stars appear for the long life and well-being of their children. Ahoi Mata, a form of Parvati, is worshipped together with the syahu, and the katha teaches repentance for harm done even unknowingly, compassion for all creatures, and selfless service.
Questions
Who is the syahu in the Ahoi picture?

The syahu (also called sehi or sahi) is a porcupine. Because a syahu's young one was killed in the katha, the mother syahu and her cubs are drawn beside Ahoi Mata and asked for forgiveness and blessings. The silver pendant worn by mothers, called the syau, is named after her.

When is the Ahoi Ashtami fast broken?

Most families break the fast after sighting the stars in the evening and offering them arghya with water from the karva. Some wait for moonrise, which on this night comes late. See the festival page for the star-sighting time in your city.

Can mothers of daughters keep this vrat?

Yes. The katha speaks of sons, as old booklets do, but today the vrat is kept for the well-being of all children, daughters and sons alike. Women who wish for a child also keep it.
