How the Vrat Is Kept

The Sakat Chauth vrat is kept on the Chaturthi of the dark fortnight of the month of Magha (by the purnimanta calendar; in amanta reckoning it falls on Pausha Krishna Chaturthi). It is also called Til-kut Chauth, Til Chauth, Sankat Chauth and Lambodar Sankashti. It is kept chiefly by mothers for the long life, health and protection from troubles of their children. On the day of the vrat, bathe in the morning and make the sankalpa while remembering Ganesh ji. Most women keep a fast without water, or with fruit only, through the day and break it only after moonrise. During the day sesame and jaggery are pounded together to make 'til-kut'; in many homes sesame laddoos, sweet potato and other things of jaggery and sesame are also prepared for prasad. In the evening spread a red or yellow cloth on a low stool and place an image or picture of Ganesh ji; in many families a symbol of Sakat Mata is also shaped from clay or cow-dung. Offer Ganesh ji roli, unbroken rice, durva grass, flowers, a sacred thread, betel nut, til-kut, sweet potato, fruit and modaks, and light incense and a lamp. Then sit with the family, holding a few grains of sesame or rice, and hear the kathas given below. After the katha perform Ganesh ji's aarti. When the moon rises, put water, a little milk, sesame, rice and flowers in a lota, offer arghya to the Moon god and pray for your children's welfare. The fast is then broken with prasad of til-kut and sweet potato. In many homes a small 'goat' is shaped out of til-kut, which a son or another child of the house 'cuts' with a straw, and that prasad is then shared among all. Check your city's moonrise time in the panchang.

The Potter's Kiln and the Old Woman's Son

This is a tale of very old times (in some tellings it is said to have happened in the kingdom of King Harishchandra). In a certain town there lived a potter. He would shape clay pots and set up his kiln (aawa) to fire them, but for some reason the kiln never fired — the pots stayed raw. When this went on happening despite his repeated efforts, the distressed potter went to the king and told him of his trouble. The king asked the royal priest for a remedy. The priest said: "Maharaj, each time the kiln is set up, a child must be sacrificed in it; only then will it fire." It was a terribly cruel remedy, but the king ordered that every family in the town should give a child in turn. Grief settled over the town. Whichever house's turn came, there was weeping and wailing there. In that town lived an old widow. She had only one son, the sole support of her old age. Some days later her turn too came, and as chance would have it, that day was Sakat Chauth. The old woman's heart was breaking, but she was a true devotee of Sakat Mata and Ganesh ji. Weeping, she bathed her son, gave him a betel nut and a little bundle of durva grass, and said: "Son, take the Lord's name and sit in the kiln, and keep remembering Sakat Mata. She will protect you." The boy was seated in the kiln and the kiln was set alight. Meanwhile the old woman kept a waterless fast all day, worshipped Sakat Mata and Ganesh ji in the evening, and prayed all night with folded hands: "O Sakat Mata! O Ganesh, remover of obstacles! Protect my son." The kiln that used to take many days to fire was fired in a single night. In the morning, when the potter opened the kiln, he was astonished — all the pots were perfectly fired, and the old woman's son was sitting in the middle of the kiln, laughing and playing, completely safe. Not one tongue of flame had so much as touched him. In some tellings it is said that on that day all the children sacrificed before were also restored to life. Seeing this miracle the whole town gathered. The king called the old woman and asked how this had happened. She told him that she had kept the Sakat Chauth fast and asked Ganesh ji and Sakat Mata to protect her son. That very day the king put an end to the practice of sacrificing children. From that time all the mothers of the town began to keep the Sakat Chauth vrat for the protection of their children.

The Old Woman's Clever Boon

In a village a blind old woman lived with her son and daughter-in-law. The household was very poor. The old woman was a great devotee of Ganesh ji and worshipped him every day; the Sakat Chauth fast she never missed. Pleased by her unbroken devotion, one day Ganesh ji appeared before her and said: "Mother, I am pleased with your devotion. Ask any boon you wish." The old woman was simple and plain-hearted. She said: "Lord, I don't even know how to ask. What should I ask for?" Ganesh ji said: "Ask your son and daughter-in-law, and then ask me tomorrow." The old woman asked her son. The son said: "Mother, ask for wealth. The poverty of the house will end." Then she asked her daughter-in-law. The daughter-in-law said: "Mother, ask for a grandson; a child's laughter will ring through the house." Then the old woman asked the neighbour women. They said: "Mother, you have grown old; who knows how many more days you will live? What will you do with wealth or a grandson? Ask for the light of your eyes, so that the rest of your life passes in comfort." The old woman lay thinking all night: the son wants wealth, the daughter-in-law wants a grandson, the neighbours tell me to ask for my eyes; if I ask for one, all the rest will be left out. Thinking and thinking, she hit upon a plan. The next day, when Ganesh ji came, she folded her hands and said: "O Ganesh ji, if you are truly pleased, grant me this boon: that I may see with my own eyes my grandson eating milk and rice from a golden bowl. May my son and daughter-in-law's marriage be blessed for ever, may the house stay full of wealth and grain, may the whole family be healthy and happy, and at the end may I find a place at your feet." Hearing the old woman, Ganesh ji burst out laughing and said: "Mother, in a single boon you have asked for everything — eyes, a grandson, wealth, a blessed marriage and liberation too! You have bound me with your words, but I cannot refuse my devotee. Go — all that you have asked for will be fulfilled." Saying this, Ganesh ji vanished. In time the light returned to the old woman's eyes, wealth poured into the house, a beautiful grandson came to play in the daughter-in-law's lap, and the old woman truly saw her grandson eating milk and rice from a golden bowl. The whole family lived happily.

Ganesh Circles His Parents

Once a great calamity befell the gods. Tormented by the oppression of the asuras, all the gods came to Lord Shiva on Kailash to ask for help. At that time Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati's two sons, Kartikeya and Ganesh, were sitting with them. Lord Shiva asked his two sons: "Which of you will remove this trouble of the gods?" Both said at once: "Father, I will." Then Lord Shiva said: "Whichever of you first goes round the whole earth and returns to me, he shall go to the gods' aid." Hearing this, Kartikeya mounted his peacock and flew off with great eagerness to circle the earth. Ganesh ji fell to thinking. His mount was only a little mouse; riding it round the whole earth would take ages. He used his wisdom. He rose from his seat, folded his hands before his parents, walked seven times around Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, bowed at their feet and sat down again. Some time later Kartikeya returned, having completed his circuit of the earth, and began to declare himself the winner. Then Lord Shiva asked Ganesh ji: "Why did you not go round the earth?" Ganesh ji answered humbly: "Father, all the worlds and all the holy places are contained in the feet of one's mother and father. Since I have circled the two of you, consider that I have circled the entire earth." Seeing Ganesh ji's wisdom and such reverence for his parents, Lord Shiva was overjoyed. He entrusted to Ganesh ji the task of removing the gods' trouble and blessed him: "Whoever keeps a fast on Chaturthi, worships you and offers arghya to the moon at night shall be freed from all three kinds of suffering — of the body, from the heavens and from the world around. You shall be known as the remover of all troubles." Ganesh ji removed the gods' troubles, and from that time this Chaturthi vrat became famous as 'Sankat Chauth'. Keeping it removes every obstacle that comes into the lives of one's children.

The Devrani and the Jethani

In a village there lived two brothers. The elder brother's wife, the jethani, came from a very wealthy family, and her house lacked nothing. The younger brother's wife, the devrani, was very poor. Her husband cut wood in the forest and sold it, and she herself did the work of her jethani's house — grinding flour, scrubbing pots, sweeping — and in return the jethani gave her leftover food, on which the devrani's household lived. Even in such poverty the devrani was a true devotee of Ganesh ji and kept the Sakat Chauth fast with faith. Once, on Sakat Chauth, the devrani kept the fast and worked all day in her jethani's house. In the evening, as she was about to leave, the jethani said: "Today we are all fasting; nothing is left over yet. Come and take it tomorrow." The devrani returned home empty-handed. Her husband came back tired and hungry, and finding nothing to eat in the house, he flew into a rage. In his anger he scolded his wife and even struck her. The poor devrani wept; she offered Ganesh ji only a little jaggery and water, and went to sleep hungry and thirsty. At midnight Ganesh ji came to her house in the form of a boy and said: "Mother, I am very hungry; give me something to eat." The devrani said: "Son, there is nothing in the house; eat the little that is left." Ganesh ji lovingly ate that plain, dry food. Then he said: "Mother, I need to relieve myself." Innocently the devrani said: "This is a broken-down hut; go wherever you like." Then Ganesh ji asked: "Now what shall I wipe my hands on?" The unhappy devrani said in exasperation: "Wipe them on my head — what else do I have!" When the devrani awoke in the morning she was dumbfounded — the whole hut was full of gold, silver, diamonds and jewels, and gems were shining in the hair on her head too. She understood that Ganesh ji himself had come in the night. That day she did not go to work at her jethani's house. When the jethani sent her children to call her, the devrani sent back word: "By Ganesh ji's grace I now have plenty." The jethani came running, heard the whole story and burned with envy. She thought she would do the same. On the next Sakat Chauth she kept the fast, but there was greed in her heart, not devotion. She deliberately had her husband scold her, and at night she set out the finest dishes. At night Ganesh ji came, ate, and asked the same questions. Full of greed the jethani said: "Relieve yourself all over the house, and wipe your hands on my head." In the morning, when the jethani rose and looked, there was no gold or silver anywhere in the house; instead the whole house was full of filth and stench, and the filth kept returning however much it was cleaned. Panic-stricken, the jethani began to beg Ganesh ji's forgiveness. Then Ganesh ji said: "You were envious of your devrani and kept the fast out of greed. Until you give half your wealth to your devrani, this trouble will not pass." The jethani gave half her wealth to the devrani, but secretly hid away one precious necklace. Even then the filth did not entirely go. Ganesh ji said: "You have still not done full justice." At last the jethani gave the necklace too to the devrani, and only then did her house become clean as before. From that day the two lived lovingly like sisters, and both kept the Sakat Chauth vrat with faith. The lesson of this katha is that Ganesh ji looks at devotion and feeling, not at rich dishes and show.

The Fruit of the Vrat

The mother who keeps the fast with faith on Sakat Chauth, worships Ganesh ji and Sakat Mata, hears or tells these kathas, and breaks her fast after offering arghya at moonrise, is blessed with children who are long-lived, healthy and honoured, and every trouble that would come upon her home is turned away. Just as Ganesh ji protected the boy seated in the kiln, filled the blind old woman's home with happiness and filled the poor devrani's hut with wealth and plenty, so may he protect every family that keeps this vrat. O Sakat Mata! As you protected the old woman's son, so protect the children of all. May the troubles of all be removed — the one who tells this katha, the one who hears it, and the one who answers along. Jai Ganesh ji Maharaj! Jai Sakat Mata! Ganpati Bappa Morya!

When it is recited: Read in the evening of Sakat Chauth — Magha Krishna Chaturthi in the purnimanta calendar (Pausha Krishna Chaturthi in amanta reckoning), in January–February — at the Ganesh puja before the moon is offered arghya. It is also called Til-kut Chauth, Til Chauth, Sankat Chauth and Lambodar Sankashti.
Traditional significance: Sakat Chauth is the most widely kept Sankashti Chaturthi of the year in North India. Mothers keep a fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and protection of their children, worship Ganesh — the remover of obstacles — and Sakat Mata, offer sesame and jaggery (til-kut) and sweet potato, and break the fast after giving arghya to the moon.
Questions
Why do some calendars say Sakat Chauth is in Pausha and others in Magha?

It is the same day. North Indian purnimanta calendars, where the month ends at the full moon, call it Magha Krishna Chaturthi; amanta calendars, where the month ends at the new moon, call the same fortnight Pausha Krishna. It falls in January or early February.

When is the fast broken?

After moonrise, once arghya of water, milk and sesame has been offered to the moon. Moonrise on Chaturthi comes well after dark, so check the exact time for your city; if clouds hide the moon, arghya may be offered in its direction after the panchang moonrise time.

Why sesame and jaggery?

Sakat Chauth falls in the cold of Magha, and sesame and jaggery are the traditional winter offerings. Til-kut — pounded sesame and jaggery — is offered to Ganesh and eaten as prasad to break the fast, which is why the day is also called Til Chauth or Til-kut Chauth.
