How the Vrat Is Kept

The Hartalika Teej fast is kept on the Tritiya of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, which usually falls one day before Ganesh Chaturthi. Married women keep it for unbroken married happiness, and unmarried girls in hope of a worthy husband. It is usually kept nirjala — without food or water through the whole day and night — and broken the next morning. In the evening pradosh period, after bathing and putting on new clothes and the adornments of a married woman, the worship is performed. A small pavilion is decorated with banana leaves or stems. Inside it, images of Lord Shiva (as a linga), Mother Parvati and Ganesh ji are shaped from sand or clean clay. Water, roli, sandalwood, unbroken rice, bilva leaves, dhatura, shami leaves, aak flowers, many kinds of flowers and leaves, fruit, sweets, and for Mother Parvati the items of a married woman's adornment — bangles, bindi, sindoor, mehndi and a chunari — are offered. After the puja all the women hear the katha together. Then the whole night is kept awake with bhajans and kirtan; there is also a custom of worshipping in each prahar of the night. The next day, after sunrise, the puja is performed and the images and puja materials are immersed in a river, lake or other holy water, the adornment items are given to a married woman, and only then is the fast broken. Pregnant, sick or elderly women may keep the vrat with water or fruit on the advice of the elders of the house.

The Story Begins on Kailash

Once on Mount Kailash, Mother Parvati said to Lord Shankar, "O Lord! You dwell within the hearts of all. Kindly tell me — by what merit, by what vrat and austerity did I win you as my husband? And which vrat is it by which a woman's married good fortune stays unbroken?" Mahadev smiled and said, "Devi, you do not remember the events of your earlier days, so I will tell you everything. The vrat by whose power you won me is the best of all vrats. It is called the Hartalika vrat. It is kept on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya under the Hasta nakshatra. Listen carefully."

Austerities in the Himalaya

Shiva said, "O Gauri! You were born as the daughter of Himavan, king of the mountains. From childhood your mind was set on me, and in your heart you had already accepted me as your husband. To win me you began severe austerities on the Himalaya, on the bank of the Ganga. By tradition, for twelve years you kept your face turned downward and took in only the smoke of a fire, and then for sixty-four years you lived on nothing but the dry leaves of trees. For a time you gave up even the leaves and lived on air alone — and that is why one of your names is Aparna. In the biting cold of Magha you stood in water at your tapas; in the blazing heat of Vaishakha you sat amid five fires — four lit around you and the burning sun above; and in the pouring rains of Shravana you sat under the open sky without food or water. Seeing you in this state, your father Himavan was deeply grieved. He would think, 'Why does my tender daughter endure such hardship? To whom shall I marry her — who is worthy of her?' His worry grew day and night."

Narada's Proposal

"One day the divine sage Narada came to Himavan's palace. Himavan received him with great honour and asked the reason for his visit. Narada ji said, 'O king of mountains! I have come on behalf of Lord Vishnu. Hearing of your daughter's austerity and virtues, Lord Vishnu wishes to marry her. Who in all three worlds could be a worthier groom than he? Tell me, if it is your wish.' Himavan was filled with joy. He thought that the very sustainer of the world was asking for his daughter's hand — what greater good fortune could there be? He agreed at once and said, 'Great sage, if Shri Hari himself accepts my daughter, I shall be blessed.' From there Narada ji went to Lord Vishnu and told him that Himavan wished to give his daughter to him in marriage. Then he went his way. Meanwhile Himavan, delighted, told this happy news to his daughter."

Parvati's Grief and Her Friend's Plan

"O Devi! Hearing this news from your father's lips, it was as though a thunderbolt fell upon your heart. To be married to anyone other than the one you had accepted as husband in mind, word and deed seemed to you harsher than death. You could not say a word; you went to your chamber and wept bitterly. A dear friend of yours saw you in this state and anxiously asked why you were weeping. You said, 'Friend, I have vowed to take Lord Shankar as my husband. But Father has settled my marriage with Lord Vishnu. I cannot break my vow. Better that I give up my life.' Your friend embraced you and reasoned with you: 'Do not speak such words. Giving up one's life solves nothing. One who has truly accepted someone as husband should keep him in her heart all her life. Come — I will take you to a forest so dense that your father cannot find you. There you can complete your tapas without fear. I am sure that Lord Shiva will surely appear before you.' You accepted your friend's counsel. She quietly led you out of the palace and took you into the deep forest. It is because you were carried away in this way by your friend that this vrat later came to be called 'Hartalika'."

The Forest Cave and a Father's Search

"Your friend brought you very far, to a lonely cave in the mountains on the bank of a river. All around was thick forest, and the murmuring of the river was the only music there. You made that cave your place of tapas and were once more absorbed in meditation upon me. Your friend served you and guarded you day and night. Back at the palace, when you could not be found, there was an uproar. Himavan, king of the mountains, searched for you in anguish. His servants combed every mountain, every forest, every cave, but no trace of you was found. Himavan would think, 'Has some demon carried my daughter away? And I have given my word to Lord Vishnu — when he comes with the wedding party, what answer shall I give him?' In this anxiety he fainted again and again. Your mother Maina, too, shed tears day and night."

The Sand Linga and the Night Vigil

"Thus time went by. Then came the Tritiya of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, and on that day the nakshatra was Hasta. That day you took the vow of a waterless fast. From the clean sand of the riverbank you shaped a Shivalinga with your own hands. Your friend brought you all kinds of flowers, bilva and other leaves from the forest. With great love you worshipped that linga of sand and gave your whole heart to it. Night came, but you did not sleep. Together with your friend you sang of my qualities all night long, chanted my name, and worshipped the Shivalinga in every prahar. No food, no water — only love and faith. Even the beasts and birds of the forest seemed to keep vigil with you that night. Such was the power of your unwavering vrat and guileless love that my seat on Kailash trembled. My samadhi broke, and I knew that my one-pointed devotee was calling me."

Shiva's Boon

"That very moment I appeared before you in the cave and said, 'O daughter of the king of mountains! I am exceedingly pleased with your austerity and your vrat. Ask whatever boon you wish.' You opened your eyes, and seeing me before you, bowed in overflowing emotion and said shyly, 'O Lord! If you are truly pleased with me, grant me this one boon — that you become my husband. In my heart I have chosen you alone.' I said, 'Tathastu — so be it. You shall be my other half.' Saying this, I returned to Kailash. The next morning you reverently immersed that sand Shivalinga and all the puja materials in the river, and with your friend broke your fast with a little prasad."

Himavan's Consent

"Just then, still searching for you, Himavan, king of the mountains, arrived in that forest with his attendants. Seeing you safe and well, tears of joy flowed from his eyes. He clasped you to his heart and asked, 'Daughter, why did you leave home and come to this fearsome forest?' You answered humbly, 'Father, since childhood I have accepted Lord Shankar as my husband and have been doing tapas for him alone. You settled my marriage with Lord Vishnu, so I left home and came here. Today Lord Shiva, pleased, has granted me the boon of accepting me as his wife. I will come with you only if you promise that you will marry me to Lord Shankar and no other.' Himavan bowed before his daughter's firmness and austerity. He agreed to your wish, explained everything to Lord Vishnu with a plea for forgiveness, and brought you home with honour. Then, at an auspicious moment, our marriage was performed according to the scriptures. O Devi, because your friend carried you away to the forest, this vrat came to be called Hartalika — 'harat' meaning to carry away and 'aalika' meaning a female friend. The vrat by whose power you won me is this very vrat of Hartalika Teej."

The Fruit of the Vrat

Lord Shiva went on, "O Devi! The married woman who keeps this vrat with faith and due rite — to her I give unbroken good fortune like yours. The unmarried girl who keeps it with a true heart gains the worthy husband she desires. And in the home of whoever tells or hears this katha, happiness, children and prosperity abide." Traditional booklets also give stern warnings against abandoning this vrat midway; their meaning is simply that the vow should not be taken lightly, and once begun it should be kept with devotion. Those who become unable for some reason may perform its udyapan (formal completion) on the advice of the elders of the house or the pandit ji. At the end of the katha, perform the aarti of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh ji, offer the adornment items to Mother Parvati, and keep the night's vigil with bhajans and kirtan. Say: Victory to Mahadev, Lord of Uma! Victory to Gauri Mata! Har Har Mahadev!

📅 Hartalika TeejBhadrapada Shukla Tritiya (Aug–Sep) · Next date for your city

Each link opens our computed festival calendar with exact dates and timings for your city.

When it is recited: Read during the Hartalika Teej puja on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, usually in the pradosh (evening twilight) worship before clay or sand images of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh, and again during the night vigil.
Traditional significance: Hartalika Teej celebrates the tapas by which Parvati won Shiva as her husband. Married women keep it for unbroken married happiness and unmarried girls for a worthy husband. The name joins harat (carried away) and aalika (female friend), honouring the friend who took Parvati to the forest so that her vow would not be broken.
Questions
Why are the images made of sand or clay?

Because in the katha Parvati shaped a Shivalinga from the sand of the riverbank in the forest. Families recreate this by making Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh from sand or clean clay, worshipping them through the night and immersing them in water the next morning.

When is the puja done and when is the fast broken?

The main puja is done in the pradosh period after sunset, followed by the katha and a night-long vigil. The fast is broken the next morning after the final puja and the immersion of the images. See the festival page for the date in your city.

How is Hartalika Teej different from Hariyali and Kajari Teej?

All three honour Shiva and Parvati. Hariyali Teej falls on Shravana Shukla Tritiya and Kajari Teej on Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya; Hartalika Teej, on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, is the strictest of the three, usually kept without water and with a night vigil.
