How this is worked out — and why our dates may differ from a printed table
Sade Sati is Shani transiting the twelfth, first and second rashi from your janma rashi: roughly two and a half years in each, seven and a half in total. Dhaiya, the small panoti, is Shani in the fourth or eighth — about two and a half years.
The part most tables skip: Shani turns retrograde every year and can cross back out of a sign and return months later. So the first entry into your twelfth house is often not the last — Shani may slip back and re-enter. We work from every crossing rather than the first, which is why a period below may show a retrograde break inside it, and why our start and end dates can differ by weeks from a table that assumed one clean entry.
