Who Was Born on This Day

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Hanuman — son of Anjana and Kesari, blessed by Vayu the wind god, the greatest devotee in the Hindu tradition and its living definition of strength in service. The infant who leapt for the sun mistaking it for a fruit; the messenger who crossed the ocean for Sita; the servant who carried a mountain because he could not identify one herb — every Hanuman story joins impossible power to complete humility. He is chiranjivi, deathless, present wherever Rama's name is sung — which is why many prefer to call the day Hanuman Janmotsav, a birth celebration, rather than a jayanti for one who never left. He is worshipped at dawn, his birth hour, when the sun he once leapt for is rising.

How Hanuman Jayanti Is Observed

The day begins at sunrise with the main puja: sindoor (vermilion) offered to the murti — recalling Hanuman covering his whole body in it when he learned a smear of sindoor on Sita's brow was for Rama's long life — with boondi laddoos, jasmine oil, and a garland of red flowers. The Hanuman Chalisa is the day's heartbeat: recited once, eleven times, or a hundred and eight; the Sundarkand — Hanuman's own book of the Ramcharitmanas — is sung in gatherings; Bajrang Baan is added by those who keep its discipline. Many observe a fast until the evening. Because Hanuman is the patron of strength, wrestlers and athletes traditionally honour the day with practice offered as worship — seva of the body given to service. Hanuman Jayanti in Ottawa & Canada

The Chaitra Purnima date is computed astronomically, so Ottawa's observance — calculated on this page for Eastern time — can differ by a day from India's. A home celebration is beautifully simple: dawn comes gently in an Ottawa April, and the sunrise puja needs only a lamp, sindoor if you have it, laddoos, and the Chalisa — our library has the full Hanuman Chalisa with meaning, along with Bajrang Baan and the Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki, all linked below. Ottawa's mandirs hold Hanuman Jayanti programmes with collective Chalisa and Sundarkand recitation — see our Hindu temples in Ottawa guide and confirm timings. Tuesday and Saturday remain Hanuman's weekdays year-round; the Jayanti is the year's crown on that steady devotion.

Questions
When is Hanuman Jayanti this year in Ottawa?

The exact Ottawa date — computed astronomically for the Canadian timezone — is shown in the Festivals & Dates list on this page, alongside Rama Navami.

Why is sindoor offered to Hanuman?

Tradition tells that Hanuman, seeing Sita apply sindoor for Rama's long life, covered his entire body in it — reasoning that so much more sindoor must mean so much more of Rama's wellbeing. Devotees have offered him sindoor ever since.

How many times should I recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Hanuman Jayanti?

There is no fixed rule — once with full attention outweighs many distracted repetitions. Devotees traditionally choose 1, 11 or 108 recitations; gatherings often complete 108 collectively.
