Angada said, “I could go across, but in my heart I have some doubt about coming back.” Jambavan replied, “You are capable in every way, but how can we send you, the leader of us all?” Then the king of the bears said, “Listen, Hanuman, why have you kept silent, O mighty one? Son of the Wind, your strength equals the wind’s; you are a treasury of intellect, discernment and wisdom. What task in the world is so hard that it cannot be done by you, dear one? You took birth for the sake of Rama’s work.” Hearing this, Hanuman grew to the size of a mountain. His golden body blazed with splendour, as if he were a second king of mountains (Sumeru). Roaring like a lion again and again, he said, “I could leap across the salt ocean in mere play,

Listen to the many virtues of him whose body is dark like the blue lotus, whose beauty surpasses that of millions of Kamadevas, and whose name is a hunter that slays the birds of sin.
I worship Raghuvara, the best of the Raghus, called Rama: the peaceful, eternal, immeasurable and sinless one, who grants the peace of final liberation; who is ceaselessly served by Brahma, Shambhu and Shesha, king of serpents; who is known through Vedanta and pervades all; the Lord of the universe, the teacher of the gods, Hari who appears as a man through his own Maya; the ocean of compassion and the crest-jewel of kings.

“until I return having seen Sita. The task will surely be accomplished, for I feel a special joy.” Saying this and bowing his head to them all, he set out joyfully, holding Raghunatha in his heart.

“Why delay any longer now? Give orders to the monkeys at once.” Watching this wondrous scene, the gods showered down flowers and joyfully returned from the sky to their own realms.

The king of the monkeys swiftly sent out the summons, and the leaders of the troops came with their troops: hordes of monkeys and bears of many colours and matchless strength.

They bowed their heads at the Lord's lotus feet, and the mighty bears and monkeys roared. Sri Rama surveyed the whole monkey army and cast His gracious glance upon it with His lotus eyes.

For Him whose every deed is auspicious, good omens at His departure are only natural. Vaidehi came to know of the Lord's departure, for her left limbs throbbed as if to tell her so.
Every good omen that came to Janaki became an ill omen for Ravana. Who could describe the army as it marched? Countless monkeys and bears were roaring.
With claws for weapons, bearing mountains and trees, they moved at will through the sky and over the earth. The bears and monkeys roared like lions, and the elephants of the quarters staggered and trumpeted in alarm.
The elephants of the quarters trumpet, the earth quakes, the mountains sway and the oceans churn. Gandharvas, gods, sages, Nagas and Kinnaras all rejoice at heart, for their sorrows are ended. Fierce monkey warriors gnash their teeth as millions upon millions rush forward, crying, “Glory to Sri Rama, mighty in valour!” and singing the virtues of the Lord of Kosala.

Even the noble lord of serpents (Shesha) cannot bear the weight and swoons again and again, and again and again he grips with his teeth the hard back of the cosmic tortoise. How does that look? It is as though, knowing the glorious march of the hero of the Raghus to be supremely auspicious, the serpent king were engraving its sacred, imperishable record on the tortoise's shell.

Masparayan
मासपारायण, चौबीसवाँ विश्राम
masaparayana, caubisavam vishrama
māsapārāyaṇa, caubīsavāṃ viśrāma
Masparayan: here ends the twenty-fourth pause (vishram) in the month-long recitation (masparayan) of the Ramcharitmanas.
Thus ends the fifth step (sopana) of the holy Ramcharitmanas, which destroys all the impurities of the Kali age.
When it is recited: Read as a path on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, at the start of a new home or venture, in times of difficulty, and in the month-long Manas parayan. Many families read it complete in one sitting (about 1½–2 hours), beginning from Kishkindha Kand Doha 29 as given here.
Traditional significance: Sunderkand is the most beloved book of the Manas — the one book in which Hanuman, not Rama, is the hero. It is the story of seva carried out with wisdom and fearlessness, and tradition holds that its recitation removes obstacles, fear and despair. Tulsidas closes it with the promise that those who hear Raghunatha's glory with reverence cross the ocean of worldly existence without a boat.
Questions
Why does the path begin before Sunderkand itself?
By long custom, the Sunderkand path opens with the closing verses of Kishkindha Kand (Doha 29–30), where Jambavan reminds Hanuman of his strength — so the reading begins with the moment that sends him across the ocean. Those verses are included at the top of this page.
How long does a full Sunderkand path take?
Read aloud at a steady pace, about one and a half to two hours; sung with a group and harmonium, often longer. It is traditionally read complete in one sitting, followed by the Hanuman Chalisa and Hanuman ji's aarti.
Which edition is this text?
The standard North Indian recension of Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, with 60 dohas (some numbered with (a) and (b) parts). Minor spelling differences between printed editions are normal; if your family's pothi differs in a word, follow your pothi.
