The Youngest Daughter-in-Law
An old woman had seven sons. Six earned their keep; the seventh was still seeking his fortune. The mother would feed the six well and give the seventh only their leavings. His wife grieved to see it, but the son would not believe her — until one day he hid and saw with his own eyes that he was fed scraps. Wounded, he set out for a distant land to try his fortune, and at home his wife's lot grew harsher: the household and the forest work all day, bread of husks to eat, and water in a broken coconut shell.
One day she saw some women keeping the vrat of Santoshi Mata and asked its method: each Friday, after bathing, worship the Mother with jaggery and roasted gram bought even for the smallest coin; hear the katha; eat one meal that day; and neither eat anything sour nor let it be served. The daughter-in-law began the vrat with faith.
The Mother's Grace
By the vrat's power the husband's fortune turned in the foreign land — his trade flourished and wealth flowed in. But he forgot his home. His wife prayed, "Mother, remind my husband of his home," and Santoshi Mata stirred his memory in a dream. He settled his accounts at once and returned with wealth, clothes and ornaments. The daughter-in-law's days turned — she now had both means and respect.
In gratitude she vowed the udyapan: a meal for eight boys, with nothing sour. Her envious sisters-in-law coached their own sons to demand something sour at the feast. After eating, the boys clamoured for khatai, took coins and bought tamarind to eat. The vrat's rule thus broken, the Mother was displeased — and the king's men came and took the husband away on a false charge.
The Udyapan Done Rightly
The daughter-in-law understood that the sour food at the udyapan had displeased the Mother. Begging forgiveness, she vowed to perform it again with full care. This time she fed Brahmin boys beyond her sisters-in-law's reach, and gave fruit and dakshina in place of anything sour. The Mother was pleased: the king himself admitted the error and released her husband with honour, and the house filled with plenty.
Some time later, Santoshi Mata — testing and blessing her devotee — approached the house in an awesome form. The mother-in-law and sisters-in-law fled in terror, but the daughter-in-law knew her Mother at once and ran to clasp her feet. Pleased, the Mata revealed her gentle form and blessed the whole family. In time a beautiful son was born, and the family lived on in happiness, keeping the Friday vrat of Santoshi Mata.
Whoever keeps the Friday vrat with faith and hears this katha, Santoshi Mata fulfils all their right wishes. — Jai Santoshi Mata!
When it is recited: Read on Fridays while keeping the Santoshi Mata vrat with gur-chana (jaggery and roasted gram), traditionally for sixteen consecutive Fridays, with an udyapan feeding eight boys a meal without anything sour.
Traditional significance: Santoshi Mata — worshipped as the daughter of Ganesha — embodies santosh, contentment. Her vrat is famously simple and open to the poorest devotee: jaggery and roasted gram, a Friday fast, and the one strict rule that nothing khatta (sour) be eaten or served, for sourness stands for the bitterness of discontent that spoils grace.
Questions
Why is sour food forbidden in this vrat?
Khatai (sourness) is the vrat's one strict prohibition — on the fast day the devotee neither eats nor serves anything sour. Symbolically, sourness stands for discontent and bitterness of speech, the very things Santoshi Mata (contentment) dissolves.
How many Fridays is the vrat kept?
Until the wish is fulfilled, commonly vowed as sixteen Fridays, followed by the udyapan: feeding eight boys a meal with no sour item, with the katha and gur-chana prasad.
