How the Vrat Is Kept

The Tuesday vrat is considered auspicious to begin on the first Tuesday of the bright fortnight of any month. Usually the vow is taken for twenty-one Tuesdays; some keep it for life. Bathe early and wear red. Before an image or picture of Hanuman ji, light a lamp of ghee or jasmine oil. Offer red flowers, sindoor, the chola (a coat of sindoor), unbroken rice, jaggery and gram, boondi or gram-flour laddus and bananas. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Baan or the Sundarkand, then hear this katha and perform the aarti. Keep celibacy and self-restraint all day, avoiding anger and harsh words. In the evening, after worship, eat once — something of wheat and jaggery, such as jaggery roti or churma; do not take salt. When twenty-one Tuesdays are complete, perform the udyapan: offer a chola to Hanuman ji, feed twenty-one Brahmins or boys, and give red cloth, jaggery, red lentils or copper in charity.

The Childless Brahmin Couple

Long ago, in a certain town, lived a Brahmin and his wife. Both were devoted to dharma, served their guests and wished no one ill. Their home did not lack much, but one sorrow quietly gnawed at both their hearts — they had no child. The courtyard was empty, and worry about old age hung over them both. After much thought the Brahmin resolved to go to the forest and worship Hanuman ji. He said to his wife: “My dear, who understands our sorrow better than Hanuman ji, the remover of troubles? I will go to the forest, do penance to him and ask for the boon of a son. You stay at home and keep to your worship of the Lord.” The Brahmin went to the forest. There every day he worshipped Hanuman ji, chanted his name and prayed with folded hands: “O son of the Wind, O beloved of Anjani, light one lamp in our empty home — grant us the joy of a son.”

The Wife's Tuesday Vow

Meanwhile at home the Brahmin's wife too began keeping the Tuesday vrat in the hope of a son. Every Tuesday she bathed at dawn, worshipped Hanuman ji, cooked food with her own hands and first offered it to Hanuman ji, and only after that did she eat. This was her unbreakable rule — without first offering to the Lord she would not put a single grain in her mouth. For a long time she kept the vrat this way with faith. Then one Tuesday some hindrance arose so that she could neither cook nor make the offering to Hanuman ji. In some tellings it is said that there was another observance or some obstacle in the house that day, so no meal could be prepared. When evening came her heart was deeply grieved. She vowed within herself: “Today I could not offer food to Hanuman ji — this is my great failing. Now I will eat only next Tuesday, after offering to Hanuman ji, and not before.” And from that day she went without food. One day passed, two days, six days passed. The Brahmin's wife only kept chanting the Lord's name. Her body grew weak, but her vow did not waver. When the next Tuesday came she was so feeble that, in the middle of the worship, she fainted and fell.

Hanuman ji's Gift: the Boy Mangal

Seeing her unshakeable devotion and stern austerity, Hanuman ji was supremely pleased. He appeared before her, brought her back to her senses and said: “Rise, mother! I am pleased with your devotion. Even after six days without food you did not break your rule. I give you a beautiful boy. He will serve you well.” Saying this, Hanuman ji placed a radiant, beautiful boy in her lap and said: “This boy has come through the grace of Tuesday, so name him ‘Mangal’.” With these words Hanuman ji vanished. The Brahmin's wife's joy knew no bounds. She made the offering to Hanuman ji, took the prasad and held the boy to her heart. She named him Mangal. The empty house rang with a child's laughter. Mangal grew day by day; he was very good-natured and served his mother devotedly.

The Husband's Suspicion

Some time later the Brahmin returned home from the forest. Seeing a beautiful boy playing in the courtyard, he asked in surprise: “Who is this boy?” His wife joyfully told him everything: “My lord, Hanuman ji himself, pleased by the Tuesday vrat, gave us this boy. His name is Mangal.” But the Brahmin did not believe it. A crooked suspicion awoke in his mind. He thought: “This woman is making up a tale to deceive me. In my absence she has done something improper, and she is using Hanuman ji's name to hide her fault.” Outwardly he stayed silent, but inwardly he burned. Suspicion blinds a man's judgement. The Brahmin made up his mind that he would get rid of this boy.

The Well

One day the Brahmin set out for the well to draw water. His wife said: “Take Mangal with you too.” The Brahmin took the boy to the well. There was no one about. Seizing the chance, that hard-hearted Brahmin pushed the boy into the well and returned home alone with the water. As soon as he reached home his wife asked: “Where is Mangal? Did he not come with you?” Before the Brahmin could answer, Mangal came laughing up to the door of the house behind him. There was no hurt on his body, and his clothes were not even wet. Seeing the boy safe, the Brahmin was stunned. His hands and feet went cold. He thought: “I myself threw him into the well — how has he come back alive?” But he could say nothing.

The Truth Revealed in a Dream

That very night, as the Brahmin slept, Hanuman ji appeared to him in a dream and said sternly: “O Brahmin! The very son you sought by worshipping me in the forest, I have given, pleased by your wife's Tuesday vrat and unbroken faith. Your wife is devoted and blameless. By doubting her and trying to kill this innocent boy you have committed a grave sin. It was I who protected the child. Even now, come to your senses — do not doubt your wife.” When the Brahmin awoke, his heart filled with remorse. He rose weeping, sat at his wife's feet and told her everything — the deed at the well and the dream. He begged her forgiveness, embraced the boy, and prostrated himself before Hanuman ji, asking pardon for his offence. From that day the Brahmin and his wife together kept the Tuesday vrat faithfully. By Hanuman ji's grace their house filled with happiness, peace and prosperity. Mangal grew up learned, strong and devoted to his parents, and the whole family remained devotees of Hanuman ji all their lives.

The Fruit of the Vrat

Women and men who keep the Tuesday vrat with faith and discipline and read or hear this katha have all their troubles removed by Hanuman ji. The childless know the joy of children, the sick gain health, those burdened by debt are freed from it, and the fearful become fearless. For those whose horoscope shows an afflicted Mangal, this vrat is also held to be beneficial; obstacles in marriage and in matters of land and home are removed as well. The lesson of this katha is: do not doubt the Lord's grace, and do not cast blame on the pure-hearted. Just as the Brahmin's wife did not abandon her vow even after six days of hunger, a vrat kept with faith and patience never goes without fruit. Say: Glory to Hanuman, son of the Wind! Glory to Ramachandra, beloved of Sita!
When it is recited: Read every Tuesday while keeping the Mangalvar vrat for Hanuman ji — traditionally for twenty-one consecutive Tuesdays, then completed with an udyapan.
Traditional significance: Tuesday is sacred to Hanuman ji and to Mangal, the planet Mars. The Mangalvar vrat is kept for courage, health, freedom from debt and fear, relief from the afflictions of Mangal, and above all for the gift of children. Its katha honours a wife's steadfast faith, and warns that doubting the pure — and doubting God's grace — brings only grief.
Questions
How many Tuesdays should the vrat be kept?

Twenty-one consecutive Tuesdays is the most common vow, begun on a Tuesday of the bright fortnight. Some devotees keep it for a year or for life. An udyapan with a chola offering to Hanuman ji and a meal for Brahmins or boys completes it.

What may be eaten on the Tuesday fast?

Traditionally one meal after the evening worship, made of wheat and jaggery (jaggery roti, churma, or similar), without salt. Many also take fruit or milk during the day if health requires; the essentials are restraint, worship and the katha.

Can women keep the Mangalvar vrat?

Yes. The katha itself is the story of a woman's Tuesday vrat. Women keep the fast, the katha and the offerings of flowers, gur-chana and lamps; by common custom some leave the application of sindoor-chola on the murti itself to the temple priest.
